Tillman Sevy “Tip” Boxell, a devoted family man, talented writer, and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away on May 24, 2023. He was born on June 14, 1946, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut. Tip's remarkable journey through life touched the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
After completing his undergraduate work at Tufts University, Tip felt a deep sense of duty and enlisted in the Marines in 1968. He fearlessly served his country and deployed to Vietnam, where tragedy struck after only 17 days. Tip valiantly endured a gunshot wound that would shape the course of his life and forever serve as a testament to his resilience and unwavering spirit.
Returning home to recover, Tip's path crossed with that of his former wife, Lisa, in Washington, D.C. They eventually married in 1970 in the Salt Lake City temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Soon after, they moved to Hawaii where he served in the Marine Corps Reserves. His first two children were born there. The family moved to Provo, UT where he continued his education at Brigham Young University and welcomed their third child. The family again moved, this time to Salt Lake City where Tip began his career in stage, screen and television. Their fourth child was born in 1980 during this time. As a father, Tip was a pillar of strength, always encouraging his children to follow their dreams and nurturing their creative spirits.
In 1988, Tip again answered the call to duty and joined the Utah Army National Guard and served on active duty from 1995-2000, in the Iraq War from 2003-2004, and on active duty in Utah from 2004-2006. During this time, he also continued with his education, earning his Master of Arts in Theater and Film in 1989. He was able to share his extensive knowledge while teaching several college courses over a number of years between 1989-2011.
Deeply devoted to his faith, Tip was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His steadfast commitment to his beliefs shaped his character and influenced his interactions with others.
Throughout his lifetime, Tip immersed himself in various creative pursuits. He possessed an insatiable love for writing and channeled his boundless imagination into crafting books, screenplays, and poetry. His words had a unique ability to captivate readers and transport them to enchanting realms. Tip's creative endeavors were a testament to his passion and intellect, leaving an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
Above all, Tip cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. Whether it was sharing stories, imparting wisdom, or simply reveling in their laughter, his family brought him immense joy and pride. His children, Paul (Heather), Anne, Matt, and Kate (Steve) Farrer, and his grandchildren, Fiona and Greyson Boxell, Landon, Ayla, Ellison, and Jameson Farrer, were the lights of his life.
Tip was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Paul and Berniece, who undoubtedly instilled in him the values that shaped his character. He is survived by his former wife, Lisa, whose bond with Tip endured beyond their marriage. He is also survived by his sister, Chris (Bill) Marshall, and his brother, John Boxell.
Tip Boxell's presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy of love, creativity, and resilience will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his family and friends find solace in the cherished memories they shared together and the knowledge that families are forever.
