Vacit Y. Ozberkmen

Dr. Vacit Yakup Ozberkmen, born on December 15, 1930, in Izmir, Turkey, peacefully passed away on July 1, 2026, at 95 years of age. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, a profound commitment to the field of medicine, and exceptional care for countless women and children. He lived with optimistic vision and a strong sense of duty to his profession and his family. He loved to travel and had courage to explore new ideas, places, and ways of living. He also invested generously in the next generation, leaving a strong foundation of values and resilience.

Dr. Ozberkmen began his remarkable journey by earning his medical degree from Istanbul University, where his passion for medicine, science, and women's health flourished. In his twenties, he served two years in the Turkish military, stationed in Antakya, Turkey.

Following his education in Turkey, he embarked on an illustrious career that would span continents and touch countless lives. This distinguished physician further honed his skills by completing his OB/GYN residency program at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. During this time, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of patient care and refined his skills as a surgeon.

Dr. Ozberkmen then returned to Turkey, where he drove the establishment of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hacettepe University Medical Hospital in Ankara, Turkey. He later pursued specialized training in oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This period of intensive study and research equipped him with the knowledge and expertise to address complex medical challenges, particularly in the realm of gynecologic cancers. He finally settled in Northern Virginia where he worked to build his own medical practice. He fully embraced the opportunities his adopted country offered and built a life defined by hard work, compassion, and service. Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen was among his proudest accomplishments.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ozberkmen was a beacon of hope for countless individuals facing medical uncertainties. His compassion knew no bounds, and his dedication to advancing the field of obstetrics and gynecology left an indelible mark on so many lives. Colleagues remember him not only for his medical acumen as an accomplished surgeon but also for his drive and willingness to train and mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Ozberkmen will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless patients whose lives he impacted. His contributions to the medical field and commitment to his patients will endure as a testament to a life well-lived in service to others.

For more than 50 years, Dr. Ozberkmen made his home in McLean, Virginia. He was an active member of the American Friends of Turkey and the American Turkish Association of Washington DC – ATADC affiliated with the Assembly of Turkish American Associations. He was highly respected and recognized for his advocacy of U.S.-Turkish relationship building. In his youth, he was an accomplished violinist. His interests also included a love of sailing, fishing, classical music, travel, history, soccer and going to the beach.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Ozberkmen's heart belonged to his dear family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ansilene. He is survived by his daughter, Deniz Dennery (Claude), of Sewell, NJ; his sons, Yasar Ozberkmen (Susan Bacheller) of Mill Valley, CA, and John Ozberkmen of Salt Lake City, UT; his seven grandchildren, Alex, Nicolas, William, Tristan, Teya, Moriah, and Nakiyah; his niece, Yesim Yumlu (Turgay), of Izmir, Turkey; and his great-nephews, Iskender and Atilla.

Dr. Ozberkmen will be remembered not only for his remarkable professional accomplishments but also for his warmth, kindness, generosity, and the lasting impact he had on the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, students, and patients. His legacy lives on through those he mentored, those he healed, and those who loved him.

A celebration of Dr. Ozberkmen's life will be held at a future date, when family and friends can gather to honor his memory and the remarkable life he lived. Details will be announced once arrangements are complete.
