Vernon Rey Morgan

Vernon’s life was defined by his complete dedication to his family, faith, and service to others. He was an incredibly selfless man, always willing to help those around him. His warm smile, teasing humor, and joyful spirit brightened the lives of all who knew him. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he lived his faith daily through acts of service and love.

Born on June 5, 1940, Vernon grew up in Granger, Utah. During his youth, his family lived in Hawaii, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. He developed a deep love for the islands and returned many times throughout his life, cherishing each visit.

As a young man, Vernon served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hong Kong, shaping his lifelong dedication to the gospel. He then graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in social work in 1965. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree from the University of Utah.

On September 1, 1967, he married the love of his life, Carol Margaret Jones, in the Salt Lake City temple, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned more than 57 years. Together they made their home Holladay, Utah, where they lovingly raised their family and lived for over 55 years. Together, they raised an incredible family, instilling in their children strong values and a love for their Savior Jesus Christ. He and his beloved wife continued their service together as missionaries in Nauvoo, sharing their testimony with all they met.

Through the joys and challenges of life, Carol was Vernon’s greatest support. In his later years as he faced dementia, she provided unwavering care and love. Her devotion to him was extraordinary, ensuring he was always surrounded by kindness and compassion.

Vernon’s career centered around helping others, first as a social worker and later as an HR professional at ZCMI, where his kindness and wisdom were deeply valued. Vernon also had a passion for music and was blessed with a beautiful voice. He was a longtime member of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, where he not only sang but also served as the choir’s personnel director, helping guide and support his fellow singers.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Iris and Mable Morgan, his siblings Marloe Morgan (survived by Peggy), LaVell Bennion (survived by Rex and Carolyn Bennion), Elaine Wilding (survived by Wally), and Janice Morgan, as well as his beloved daughter, Joyce Riding. He is survived by his brother, Keith Morgan (Kay), his devoted wife, Carol Morgan, and their loving children: Stephen and Amanda Morgan, Roger and Susan Morgan, Brian and Julie Morgan, Eric and Katie Morgan, Carrie and Jason Knapp, Trisha and Matt Deming, Stuart and Celia Riding, Joan and Chad Taylor. Vernon also leaves behind a powerful legacy in his 36 grandchildren, his great-grandson, and his great-granddaughter, who will soon join the family.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and again on Monday, March 24, from 11:00 to 11:45 AM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM. All services will take place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2675 East 4430 South, Holladay, UT. A Zoom link for the services is available upon request. Interment will take place at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Vernon touched countless lives through his gentle strength, compassion, and devotion to his family and God. While he will be deeply missed, his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come. As Vernon often shared his love through song, we know that his voice now joins the choirs of heaven, singing praises to the Lord he so faithfully served.
