

He was born in Mt. Vernon, New York on February 24, 1939 to Lorenz and Maria Zopes. He was raised in Pelham, New York. Vern graduated from Stepanic High School in White Plain and received a degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
He joined the Army at 18 and retired 21 years later as an Artillery Officer. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Vern met Kay Rieban at Fort Meade, Maryland. They were married on June 10, 1972 in Salt Lake City.
After retiring from the Army, he worked for Metz Baking Company and H & R Block.
Vern enjoyed working with his hands and creating projects from wood and leather. He was devoted to his wife and two daughters and loved watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Zopes, his daughters Kelly Zopes and Kristy Downing (John), his grandchildren, Zachary, Nathan, Haleigh and Jonathon Downing and his brother Larry Zopes (Stella). He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother.
He was always very proud of being in the military and loved his country.
The Funeral will be held at St. Ambrose (2315 Redondo Ave) in Salt Lake City on Monday, June 30 at 10am. Friends may visit the family at the church one hour before the service. He will be buried at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery (3401 S Highland Drive) following the funeral.
