Virginia Jeannette Lambourne Cottrell, age 96, passed away peacefully in her home on December 4, 2015. She was born June 5, 1919 to Scipio Kenner (S.K.) Lambourne and Florence Sudbury in Mohrland, Emery County, Utah (now a coal mining ghost town). At birth, she weighed less than two pounds in a town with no doctor. Her mother had four friends who were expecting children, but due to the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, Virginia was the only one of the five births that survived. Because she was so tiny, her mother placed her in the sewing machine drawer, which vibrated enough to keep her breathing.
Virginia was raised in Sugarhouse, along with her three siblings, John Scipio (Jack) Lambourne, Geraldine (Jerry) Rogers, and Daniel Kenner (Dan) Lambourne. She married her sweetheart, William Glen Cottrell on May 26, 1939, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1943.
She is survived by her three children, Dr. Stephen D. (Judy) Cottrell, Dr. Courtland G. (Pauleen) Cottrell, and Debbie Kristine (Dr. Wesley R. Brown), 12 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren, with two on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her husband, and daughter-in-law, Judy. She was an active member of the Foothill 2nd Ward of the LDS Church, and has served in the Stake Young Women Presidency, Ward Relief Society President, and several other callings.
There will be a viewing held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary on Friday, December 11th from 6-8 p.m. located at 3401South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00 am at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Chapel, preceded by a viewing from 10-10:45 a.m.
