William “Bill” Mandl, 73, died August 30, 2022 in Salt Lake City, UT after a long battle with cancer. Bill was born December 20, 1948 in Grand Junction, Colorado to Larry and Katherine Mandl. The Mandls moved to Salt Lake City when Bill was in elementary school and eventually relocated to Brigham City, UT, where Bill graduated high school in 1967. However, Salt Lake City is where Bill called home the majority of his life.
Although his formal education ended with high school, Bill never ceased learning, always taking something apart, if only to see how it worked. Be it cars or computers, his home or office was always littered with some piece of equipment torn down to its constituent parts. He never stopped tinkering. Even as he aged, Bill never feared a new gadget or technology as long as he was able to take it apart. Over his life, having repaired so many things, he was ‘the guy’ you called for help to work on your car, computer or air conditioner. The cost was parts, some beer and good conversation. Bill was always willing to help. Although Bill never married or had any children, he was known as “Uncle Bill” to many of the children and grandchildren of his close friends.
Never one to enjoy working for anyone but himself, Bill owned and operated a number of small businesses throughout his life: a bar, a golf shop and most recently, a small computer and networking company, to name a few. He always considered his customers his friends and, appropriately, many of his friends were customers. Ever trusting, Bill would not hesitate to make handshake deals, in spite of the trouble these deals could periodically cause.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James L. Mandl, Sr. He is survived by his nephews James L. Mandl, Jr., Mark (Tiffanie) Mandl and two great nephews, Ethan and Luke Mandl.
Special thanks to Clay Bock and Brad Burt, who never stopped visiting, helping and simply being present to the very end of Bill’s days. Both great friends in the truest sense.
