Carmine Bracco, Jr. went home on April 24 at the age of 83. Through his lifetime, “Junior” repeatedly cheated death but bounced back from every ailment stronger than before. His final battle with cancer showed his unwavering courage and character of facing life challenges with a smile.
The youngest of five children born to the late Sarah (Brennan) and FDNY Dep Chief Carmine Bracco Sr., Carmine was born on August 1, 1938. He attended St. Francis Prep and Fordham University, where he received his B.A. in Accounting in 1960, while simultaneously serving in the US Army Reserves.
The mathematically gifted Carmine, often reveling in numbers, started as a CPA at Peat Marwick and quickly excelled to become a banking executive at the some of the world’s top banks in his 30+ year career. During this time, he moved his family to Babylon, NY, where he would become a recognizable member of the community as Treasurer of the Babylon Beautification Society. He also shared his knowledge with local students, teaching night school accounting at Suffolk County Community College and coaching the SCCC Men’s Basketball team.
In the late 1990’s, Carmine retired from banking but quickly learned he was dreadful at golf and bored without a career. Carmine felt a renewed sense of purpose through his work at Little Flower Children & Family Services, a non-profit seeking to improve the lives of children in crisis, a cause close to his heart. He also enjoyed his role as Treasurer for the local Sons of Italy. His favorite jobs however, were as husband, father and grandfather.
In 2005, Carmine and Helen were joyfully married in a beautiful garden ceremony surrounded by their family and friends. Carmine’s heart would grow bigger from that day on and he and Helen would soon make a wonderful new life together, eventually having ten grandchildren to love and spoil.
Of the many memories family and friends will have, Carmine’s unwavering love and constant concern for his family will be at the forefront. Holidays and traditions were a priority to Carmine, who loved spending time with his family and watching the Jets and Yankees. Incapable of truly relaxing, Carmine worried constantly about his “girls” and called them daily up until the very end.
Carmine is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marie Kokolis, brother-in-laws Patrick Ammirati and Steve Kokolis, cousin and best friend Bart Spota and longtime sidekick, Jack O’Brien. We envision nothing short of a loving reunion when he arrives home in heaven.
Carmine leaves behind a devastated family: his loving wife, Helen (DeMarinis) Bracco, daughters Beth Bracco and Caroline Frostrom (Gregg), siblings Vincent Bracco, Matthew & Nancy Bracco and Patricia Ammirati, stepchildren Tony DeMarinis (Jenn), Theresa Nicol (Mark), his ten grandchildren Andrew, Julia, Ella, Rebecca, Kathleen, Matthew, Amy, Maggie, Drew and Addison, and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.
