Donald ‘Don’ Boyce, was born on May 4, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY and passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 27, 2020 in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He is predeceased by his parents Robert & Mary, brother William, sister June. sister in-law Jean, and brother in-law Joseph. Don will be joining, in heaven, his loving wife, Caroline (Dinsmore). They were married for over 47 years until her passing in 2004.
While in high school, Don received accolades as an athlete and star baseball pitcher. As a young adult, he served his country when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he trained as a paratrooper assigned to the 11th Airborne Division. Following his discharge from the Army, he married his beautiful bride, Caroline. They then moved from Queens, NY to the suburbs of Long Island where together they raised a family of 5 girls and 3 boys: Diane (James Foster), Donna (Brian Bochow), Barbara (James Lafaman), Brian, Darin, Carole, Don (Robin) and Mary Ann (Charles Russo). Don was affectionately named "PopPop" by his first grandchild. The name carried on through all 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. PopPop was the type of man who could always make any child laugh with his “buzzing” finger and Donald Duck noises.
During his work career he was a dedicated, valued employee of the N.Y. Telephone Company, which spanned 30 years. He retired in the management position of Staff Specialist.
Don had many varied pastimes and hobbies that he enjoyed during his lifetime. Over the years, some of these included hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, bowling and golfing, all of which he took pleasure in teaching and sharing with his wife, children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards and various board and video games with family and friends. At times, of course, these games would include joking accusations of who was “cheating” or who was actually the “best” player, but most always they would be filled with uncontrollable laughter. Don always took great pride in cultivating his backyard garden of colorful flowers, fruits and vegetables and loved sharing with others the fruits of his labors. Among his other creative hobbies and interests, he was an avid photographer and video editor which initially stemmed from his experience with aerial and still photography while in the Army. Don also was a very talented amateur oil painter. Many of his canvas works are proudly displayed in the homes of family members.
Don will be dearly missed by his entire family including his sisters-in-law Sister Jane Dinsmore, CSJ, and Rose Marie (Merante-Dinsmore), brother in-law Robert Tursky (Tina), Sister Agnes Schwintek, CSJ, and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, for those who desire, contributions in memory of Donald may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, ℅ Sister Jane Dinsmore, 1725 Brentwood Road, Building 3, Brentwood, NY 11717 or to your favorite charity.
