Dorothy Marie Sullivan (nee Broedel) of Ridge, NY, (formerly of Brentwood, NY) entered Eternal Life on February 12, 2013. Dorothy was born on August 3rd, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, to her wonderful parents the late Walter P. and Mabel (Downs) Broedel.
Dorothy was further blessed with her two dear younger sisters, Patricia (Gibson) and the late Mary (Roth). She remained extremely close to her sisters for her entire life and together the three of them set a great example to all of their combined 16 children. Dorothy grew up in a very special place in Brooklyn called Windsor Terrace. Her childhood was filled with many happy memories of playing with the children from that neighborhood. She attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Grammar School and St Brendan's High School. All through her life she kept in touch with and remained close to many of the friends she made in her neighborhood and her two schools. Her parents' great Catholic Faith and her Catholic education provided her a strong faith-filled foundation and devotion to God that was essential to her whole life.
Shortly after World War II, Dorothy met John F. Sullivan at a Knights of Columbus dance that was popular with the boys (as she called them) who were returning home from the war. They fell in love and married on October 22nd,1949. Together they had six children: John M. (Marie Inserra), Michael F., Dorothy A. Stanley (Robert), Maureen T., Timothy J. (Caroline) and the late Nancy M. who pre-deceased her; as did her Beloved husband, John. They eventually settled in Brentwood, NY, and raised their family there. Dorothy sent her children to Catholic Schools and made sure to pass on her strong Catholic Faith to them which her parents had passed on to her. Eventually she became a Grandmother to eight special grandchildren: Tara, Michael, Kaitlin, and Erin Stanley; and Patrick, Liam, Emma Kate, and Timothy Sullivan. Spending time with her grandchildren gave her enormous joy in her later years.
Dorothy was also extremely fond of her many wonderful nieces, nephews, and their children. They in turn were all very good to her and were a tremendous Blessing in her life.
Dorothy had a full life and remained very active up until the last three months when she became ill, even driving as late as October, 2012. She had many friends where she lived in Leisure Village in Ridge, NY, where she had moved in 1998. She also visited with many of her friends from Brentwood. This was of course in addition to spending much time with all of her family and extended family. She also volunteered at various organizations throughout her life including Good Samaritan Hospital, Pilgrim State Hospital, and until very recently at AHRC in Bohemia, NY, an organization that was very special in her life. In addition she belonged to various groups including the Catholic Daughters, the Christian Mothers of St. Anne's, Brentwood, NY, and St Marks' Parish, just to name a few.
Reposing at the O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, NY 11764. Visitation Saturday and Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass Monday 10 AM at St. Mark’s R.C. Church, Shoreham, NY. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
Dorothy would have much preferred that instead of sending flowers, you make a small donation to either of the following two organizations that mattered deeply to her: IGHL Foundation, 221 North Sunrise Svc Rd, Manorville, NY, 11949, or AHRC Suffolk, 2900 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Bohemia, NY, 11716.
