George E. Meinken

September 9, 1943 – July 9, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Eugene Meinken, who passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 82.

George was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Linda; a proud father and father-in-law to his sons, Todd and Tim, and their wives, Maria and Gretchyn; and a deeply beloved grandfather to his grandson, Ethan.

Family was the center of George’s life, and he found his greatest joy in the people he loved most. He was happiest around his immediate and extended family and his dear friends.

George was born on September 9, 1943, in Bay Shore, New York, and was the son of the late Henry Meinken, Sr. and Patricia Willis Meinken. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Meinken, Jr., and his sister, Elinore Meinken.

He grew up in North Babylon, New York, where he developed the strong work ethic, humility, and quiet determination that would define his life.

Gifted in science and driven by an unwavering commitment to excellence, George began his career at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1963. In 1966, he was awarded a prestigious Atomic Energy Commission scholarship, which enabled him to attend college full time while continuing his work. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1968 and went on to build an extraordinary 48-year career as a nuclear chemist. Throughout his distinguished career, George authored numerous scientific publications and co-invented patented technologies that contributed to advances in nuclear medicine and cancer diagnosis and treatment. His work left a lasting impact on both the scientific community and the patients whose lives were touched by those advancements.

In November 1970, George met the love of his life, Linda. They were married in October 1971 and built a partnership that spanned nearly fifty five years. Together they created a home filled with warmth, stability, laughter, and unconditional support.

As a husband and father, George led not through words but through example. He believed deeply in the value of hard work, integrity, education, perseverance, and being there for his family and friends. He was a constant presence in the lives of his sons, enthusiastically supporting their academic, athletic, and life pursuits, celebrating their accomplishments, and encouraging them through every challenge. More than anything, he wanted to give his family every opportunity to succeed, and his quiet sacrifices and support shaped the lives of those he loved.

Outside of his career, George embraced an active and disciplined lifestyle. An avid runner in his younger years, he completed numerous half marathons and remained committed to health and fitness throughout his life. Whether he was tending to his yard, taking a long walk with his beloved husky, Ali, enjoying a glass of wine with family and friends, or simply spending time with those he loved, George found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He also volunteered his time feeding the homeless at the Trinity Unity Methodist Church soup kitchen. George’s consistency, discipline, and appreciation for everyday moments were hallmarks of the life he lived.

Fittingly, George passed away shortly after completing the morning fitness routine that had long been part of his daily life—a reflection of the determination and purpose with which he approached each day.

George will be remembered as a brilliant scientist, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a man of quiet strength, humility, and character. His legacy lives on not only through his professional accomplishments, but through the values he instilled in his children and the love and support he gave so freely to his family.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; his sons, Todd (Maria) and Tim (Gretchyn), his grandson, Ethan, brothers and sisters in law, and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

A memorial visitation will be held at O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place, on Thursday July 16th from 2-4pm & 6-8pm . The following day there will be a church service on Friday July 17th at St Frances Cabrini church in Coram at 10:30am.
