Louise Bellport, 55 year resident of Shoreham Village, passed away on May 9, 2018 at the age of 92 in the company of family. Louise was born in Peoria, IL in 1925 and raised in Minneapolis, MN. Always a voracious reader, she was a high school Salutatorian and earned a Bachelor Degree from the University of Minnesota. She married Charles Porter III, a nuclear physicist, and after living in Boston MA , Helsinki Finland, Los Alamos NM, and St. Paul, MN, they moved to Shoreham Village in 1960. Her husband worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory and was a co-formulator of the Porter-Thomas Distribution, a fundamental property of physics. Charles Porter III died in 1964 leaving Louise with three young children. She then returned to being an elementary school teacher, a profession she had followed before the birth of the children. She was a fourth grade teacher at Shoreham Elementary School where she met, and married, the other fourth grade teacher, John Bellport. Louise and John were at the center of the Shoreham Country Club and Shoreham beach scene for many years. In season they could be found at Shoreham beach every day. Louise, who was a Democrat, and John who was a Conservative party member who eventually served as a Brookhaven Town Councilman, were a dynamic couple. John, who passed away in 2008, always referred to Louise as “the main event” and so she was. They were both crazy about the beach and spent winters in Big Pine Key, FL going to Bahia Honda Beach State Park every day. Louise became close with the gate guards there and baked them pumpkin bread often. Louise was an active swimmer, tennis player, and in her later years, a cyclist. She loved long walks as well, especially along the beach, in all seasons. She had a monster collection of beach glass found over her many years of beach combing and she kept it in about 50 clear glass carafes proudly displayed on her Shoreham back porch.
She is survived by three children from her first marriage: Charles “Chick” Porter IV, Katie Polk, and Richard Porter. In addition she is survived by Patrick Bellport, of her second marriage. She has eight grandchildren: Charles “Charlie” Porter V, and Vivian Porter, children of Charles Porter IV and Mary Porter; Magnolia Porter, Delaney Porter, and Olivia Hart-Kobel, children of Richard Porter and his wife Marion Hart; Abigail Bellport, Isabel Bellport, and John Bellport, children of Patrick and Maria Bellport. She also has one great grandchild, Luzmira Porter, daughter of Charles “Charlie” Porter V and his wife Paula Vecino. She will be greatly missed by all.
