Mario and Florence shared a beautiful love story that began when they met at a Halloween party. That first meeting grew into a lifelong partnership, and they were married for nearly 67 years. Mario was a devoted, loving husband and caregiver to Florence until the end. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Mario and Florence spent 21 wonderful years enjoying their retirement in Florida before returning to Long Island in 2012. Back home, they enjoyed attending a sing-along group, spending time with family, taking trips to the park, and simply being together.
Mario was a talented and meticulous pattern maker and carpenter. A true perfectionist and artist when it came to woodworking, he took great pride in creating beautiful and meaningful pieces for the people he loved. Among his most treasured creations is a handmade baby cradle that has been used by thirteen of his descendants and will continue to be cherished and passed down through generations—a lasting testament to his skill, love, and devotion to his family.
He had many interests throughout his long and fulfilling life. Mario loved ballroom dancing and music, was an avid reader of news and financial magazines as well as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics, and was a karate enthusiast. He approached everything he did with curiosity, precision, and enthusiasm. He also adored his family’s beloved grand dogs, Gizmo, Nikki, Chewy, and Mia.
Mario’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He is survived by his daughters, Corinne Franco and her husband Nicholas, and Aileen Zeccola and her husband Michael.
He was the cherished grandfather of Robert Franco and his wife Krystn, Brian Franco and his wife Sarah, Matthew Franco and his wife Christine, Laura Viccaro and her husband Nicholas, and Christopher Zeccola.
He was a proud great-grandfather to Ethan, Samuel, Nathan, Nicholas, Maple, Pepper Florence, Giovanni, and Lorenzo.
Mario is also survived by his sister Angela and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary and Giovanna, who are now reunited with Mario and Florence.
Mario will be remembered for his gentle heart, his devotion to Florence, his remarkable craftsmanship, his curiosity about the world, and, above all, the love he gave so generously to his family. The many things he built with his hands—and the memories he created with his heart—will continue to live on through the generations.
His family will forever carry his love with them, just as his beautiful craftsmanship will remain in their homes and hearts for years to come.
May Mario and Florence dance together again, forever.
