Born on July 6, 1934, in the Bronx, New York, Mary was the beloved daughter of Irish immigrants, Michael (Joe) and Mary (Massie) Mitchell. She devoted her life to her family and all who knew her, touching many with her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love.
Mary and her beloved husband, John Edward McCormack, shared 60 years of marriage and built a life together on Long Island. After moving to Lindenhurst in 1962 and Brentwood in 1964, they settled in Rocky Point, where they lived for 48 years, raised their family, and built lifelong friendships. John passed in August 2020.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her greatest joy was her family, and she took tremendous pride in the lives and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She was known for her warmth, generosity, and her ability to make others feel welcomed and loved.
She also found great fulfillment in her work at BOCES, where she spent 17 years working with special needs children. She deeply loved the students she supported and formed lasting friendships with colleagues who became like family.
Music was a lifelong passion. As a child, Mary sang in her school glee club and performed in plays. That love of music continued throughout her life, and she was a longtime member of the choir at St. Louis de Montfort Church. Her faith and music were enduring sources of joy and comfort.
Mary is survived by her six children: Theresa Bianco, Steven McCormack, Ann Gross and her husband Hardison, Maureen Desmond and her husband David Desmond, Catherine Wall and her husband Ross Wall, and Jean Carrera; her nine grandchildren: Laura and John Desmond, Robert Bianco (sp: Sabrina), Bryan Grosic (sp: Teodora), Daniel and Mary Wall, Elizabeth, Eileen and Evelyn Carrera; and her great-granddaughter, Sienna Bianco.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Edward McCormack; her parents, Michael and Mary Mitchell; and her brothers, John and Joseph Mitchell. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Donnelly, Ann Kenny, and Agnes Bonamo, with whom she shared a lifelong close bond as the eldest sister who helped care for them growing up.
Mary often shared that the foundation of a good life was faith, family, and education, and she took great pride in her family’s accomplishments, often sharing their stories with her friends at the “Bagel Club.”
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9 from 3pm to 7pm, at OB Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place, New York, followed by a Funeral Mass on Friday, July 10 at 10am, at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church in Sound Beach, New York. Internment will be at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton NY following the mass.
Her family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, John, and that her legacy of faith, love, generosity, and devotion to family will live on through the generations she so deeply cherished.
