Roger Schaefer, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed aerospace engineer, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and ingenuity that touched the lives of many.
Roger shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Marilynne. Together, they built a life filled with faith, family, and shared service. He was the cherished father of Jennifer and her husband, Mathew, and his son Gregory and his wife, Zelia. Roger took great pride in his grandchildren Sophie, Allie, and Amanda, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his dear nieces and nephews: Claire, Kay, Rebecca, Bobby, and Jackson.
A brilliant mind, Roger dedicated over 40 years of his career as a software and aerospace engineer for Northrop Grumman. He was a proud member of the team that contributed to the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing, a historic accomplishment that left a lasting mark on space exploration.
Beyond his professional achievements, Roger’s passions filled his life with creativity and joy. A dedicated model railroader, skilled woodworker, and talented videographer, he found beauty in craftsmanship and storytelling. He sang with the Harbormen Chorus for 14 years, sharing his love for music with others. A true fixer of all things, he had an innate ability to repair, restore, and improve anything he set his hands on. He found comfort in the warmth of his fireplace and relaxation in reading murder mysteries and Sherlock Holmes stories. In his younger years, he enjoyed country line dancing and horseback riding, while in later years, he cherished his role as a devoted father and grandfather.
Roger’s deep faith was evident in his service to his community. As a Eucharistic Minister at St. Margaret of Scotland, a religious educator, and a Pre-Cana instructor alongside Marilynne, he guided and inspired many in their spiritual journeys.
Roger’s presence in the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His legacy—of kindness, dedication, and innovation—will continue to inspire generations to come.
