Today is November 2, 2024, at approximately 11:06 AM. I graduated from Commack High School in 2019 and graduated college in 2023. I had Mr Hobbes in 7th grade English and again in 9th grade English. He had a hilarious and energizing personality, and the class loved him for that. I am three years late since today. I just randomly searched Mr. Hobbes's name on Google and wanted to see how he was doing teaching the Commack School District or if there were any updates from him in general. But better late than never. I don't know your cause of death but I understand life can be cut short for people, especially at age 49. I wanted to say I love you as a person and all the hard work you did for thousands of students in Commack. I specifically remembered the last talk we had was me leaving the building and you asked about what last final I took before my summer began and I answered "I took Spanish, Mr Hobbes!" I wish I had given a more formal goodbye and hugged you, that's a notable regret I carry on my shoulders to this day. You were never afraid to lash out in front of bad-attitude students and I respected you for that. I always loved you who the man you were before and even now since your spirit is still with us. There is a reason why I forgot some of my other teachers except for wonderful teachers like you... May god bless you and your family, you were a true American hero who stood on all educational and human values. Rest in peace to my favorite teacher.

My girls all had Mr Hobbes for English in Commack and he was their favorite teacher. He had my twins, Stephanie and Jessica, who are now 27, and Victoria, who is 23. 
He was just such a wonderful teacher and a wonderful man. 
He will be sorely missed. 
I hope he is teaching kids about English literature in heaven right now. 

This broke my heart to see. Mr.Hobbes was easily my favorite teacher. I had him for 7th grade English and a poetry class my junior year of high school. From 7th grade to graduation, he always brightened up my day and motivated me in my school work. I remember I was struggling a bit in my junior year, but his constant comments and compliments on my writing always seemed to boost me up. He also agreed to write my college reccomendation letter, which of course gets me thinking that he really played a part in getting me to where I am, a semester away from graduating college. I also remember in 7th grade I told him that my favorite show was the Twilight Zone so he put it on one day towards the end of the year. He was such a kind soul and always wanted to make his students happy. RIP Mr.Hobbes, You'll never be forgotten!

Mr. Hobbes was by far one of my favorite teachers. He always found a way to make me laugh and keep me engaged with class material. Even though I wasn't the best student he always saw the potential in me and helped me become a better student.  Mr. Hobbes also understood that there was more to school than just school. He took the time to inspire us and teach us valuable life lessons. He went above and beyond his duties as a teacher. Even after he wasn't my teacher anymore, he would always stop and ask how I'm doing whenever we crossed paths. He truly cared about all of his students and I will always remember him that way. Mr. Hobbes was the best teacher I have  ever had. He was my 7th grade English teacher at Commack Middle School. 
Being in Mr. Hobbes’ class was truly a blessing. It was a bright part of my everyday schedule. His class was one where we could spend the time discussing the symbolism of “The Outsiders” and leave smiling or laughing at one of his jokes. 
Mr. Hobbes told me one day in class to “never forget about my 7th grade English teacher when I become the first female president.” I will never forget the kindness in his heart, and the way he helped students believe in themselves even when they did not.
I am deeply saddened to hear about his passing, and his memory will live on forever in the hearts of so many individuals. Thank you for saying hi to me in the hallways, and thank you for the wonderful memories of an amazing teacher. Rest In Peace. ❤️

I remember when I had Mr.Hobbes back in 7th grade in 2012-2013. I can honestly say till this day that he is and was the best teacher that I’ve ever had and it was a pleasure to be apart of his class and share all those memories. Mr. Hobbes impacted my life in a way that I will always hold his name close because of what he did for me. He taught me that work isn’t supposed to be all serious and demanding, he came into class everyday and put a smile on everyone of our faces everyday and that’s the difference between a good teacher and a great teacher, he taught me that life isn’t just about getting assignments done but it’s also about listening and observing, and most of all he taught me to just have fun. I will never forget the day that he and my classmate jay switched places in my class and Mr.Hobbes literally flipped himself over my desk into the next row of seats, never in my life have I seen a teacher so dedicated to his students happiness and laughter, and that is why I will always remember Mr.Hobbes. Thank you for always being the best teacher that anyone could ask for Mr.Hobbes we will all miss you greatly. And my deepest condolences to the Hobbes family.

I worked with Terry for 10 years. He was the most caring and amazing teacher ever!!  My both sons had him and Loved him so much!!

I'll never forget when he came to see me in the bubble at CMS after my husband Sal died.  He sat in front of me and spoke the most beautiful words about Sal! He was so emotional, and so was I.  I know he is an angel and it was time for him to go home.  But he will never leave you.  God bless you all.

The greatest teacher I'll EVER have. The impact Mr. Hobbes had on me and my friends, family and classmates will stay with us forever. He treated a pack of unruly 7th graders as equals in his classroom, which gave us the true opportunity to thrive as both students and individuals. The  legendary impersonation of Jay and his water bottle crinkling still comes up in conversations amongst friends today. He was a true inspiration who gave me invaluable insights on life, learning, and relationships. I hope to make him proud and continue to carry out the lessons, big and small, that he so graciously imparted onto me.

I had Mr. Hobbes first period my freshman year. I remember that first day I was absolutely terrified, but when i entered Mr. Hobbes classroom I felt at ease. He made everyone feel so comfortable and made the class fun. I looked forward to going every morning. I don’t remember a day where we didn’t have a laugh in his class. Mr. Hobbes was not only an incredible teacher but such a kind man. He will be missed. Sending my deepest condolences to his family. 

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Hobbes as my 9th grade english teacher. I can honestly say I have never had a more fun and personable teacher than him. Starting the school day with his class truly put me in the best mood and I am so thankful to have had him as a teacher! Rest in peace

On the first day of class, Mr. Hobbes asked us to write a “fact” about ourselves so that he could learn about his students. Seeing that he was drinking out of an Islander coffee cup, I wrote about how I was an Islander fan. Then a few days later, unprovoked, Mr. Hobbes went up to me at my desk before class, and asked about my thoughts about a trade the team made. From then to the end of the year we would talk about the team.  He was a bright spot in my day. He cared about students more than many teachers do. May he Rest In Peace . Condolences to his family.

I am truly devastated to learn of Mr. Hobbes passing. I was lucky enough to have him as my 7th grade English teacher, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of his class. Not only was he a great teacher, he was a great man, and I knew he was also a great family man as well. I consider myself very lucky to have had him as a teacher and to got to know him so well. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family and friends. 

It is hard to believe that such an amazing man has been taken so early from us. I have nothing but fond memories of Mr. Hobbes. He truly made his class enjoyable and impactful while never failing to make everyone laugh. The dignity and respect he showed his students was unmatched. No Commack teacher will ever compare. Wow, I was truly devastated when I heard the news. Rest in Peace to my favorite English Teacher ever. You were the only teacher that really asked me how I was doing and genuinely cared how I felt if I came into class upset. At the time when you called me out when I fooled around I didn’t like it, but when I started to mature I realized you were doing it for my benefit. I remember you used to tell me all the time when I stopped in your class how proud you were of me. I will never forget you. Rest in Paradise.

Dear Janine and all the Hobbes family,

I remember Terry as my brother Austin’s childhood friend and as a mischievous and delightful spirit. Terry brought light, humor, and joy to this world, and he will be deeply missed. Anyone who has followed Terry’s journey through his illness and his recovery can’t help but be awed by how he faced these challenges with unfailing resilience and amazing grace. I know that Terry touched and affected so many lives as a truly wonderful teacher. Terry was a remarkable person and he lived a remarkable life. I always loved spending time with Terry’s sister Jeannine and the whole Hobbes family – your house was always filled with life, love, and laughter. I pray that this love will sustain you, Barbara, Jeannine, John, Patrick, Josh, Katie, Janine, Sara, Jillian, and Ryan, in your loss and grief. 

I am so heartbroken over this news. Mr. Hobbes was my english teacher in middle school ca. 2012. He has always been one of my most favorite teachers and human beings. I would see him every now and then before I graduated high school and he wrote the kindest thing in my yearbook. I am currently in college studying to be a teacher, and I know in my soul he is one of the reasons I want to be a teacher. I wish I had gotten the chance to tell him how much of an impact he had on me. I have never known another person quite like him. Sending condolences and healing to his family. 

When I found out Mr. Hobbes passed away I was absolutely devastated. I had him in middle school and when he was moved up to the high school I passed his classroom and he screamed, MORGAN and I would say HOBBES! It was our ritual. Over the years through middle school and high school I’ve had some incredible teachers but none like Hobbes, he truly cared about his students and was a wonderful man. He was my absolute favorite teacher and I am going to remember him as a I saw him. An incredible educator and an amazing being. To the family, we lost a good one. May he rest in peace. I hope it comforts you to know how many lives he had an effect on. In Hobbes class we read S.E Hinton’s “The Outsiders”.  “Stay Gold Hobbes”, till then. 

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Hobbes’ passing. I had him as my English teacher in middle school and high school. He helped me improve my writing skills immensely. He was one of my favorite teachers and a wonderful person to know. I remember he would always share stories about his family to the class. You could tell he loved them very deeply. His story touched me significantly at the time as well, because I also underwent various medical issues a few years ago. I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Terry. My family and the Hobbes family have always been close. We shared a lot of special memories over the years and Terry was always laughing and having fun. My prayers are with their friends and family during this difficult time. 

Terry I met you on your road to recovery and I soon realized that you were a very special person .I found you to be articulate  , very smart and full of wit .You fought so hard to regain what you had lost and always with a smile .I marveled at your loving family and how hard they worked along side you .I will never forget you or your family and how much love you had on display for each other.A true example for us all , God Bless you and your family .

All of us at NYU Rusk are truly saddened to hear of Terry's passing. We have such memories of Terry's spunk, attitude, and quiet determination as he worked through his rehab with us. We also remember the tremendous love that was shared between him and you all, his family - all his siblings, his parents, his children, and of course his wife Janine. He loved to tell the story of how he met her, with his second favorite story being how awful he was working in finance. Mr.Hobbes was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He was my 7th grade English teacher and now I’m currently 25. I will never forget the laughs I had in that class and how much he taught us. One time we were watching a movie and I made a Saturday night live reference and the only one who understood was Mr.Hobbes. He recognized me years later and I couldn’t believe it. He was an amazing man and teacher and someone I will never forget. God bless his soul. I pray for his family and friends.

Dear Hobbes Family,
Our family has been reminiscing about all of the great get-togethers shared with you all and Terry over the years.  Terry was always so good natured, with an easy laugh, and a sly smile. 

My brother tells hilarious stories about the year  my dad (also an English teacher), brought Terry,  Austin, and another friend to our favorite place-Jensen's, in the Berkshires, and about the time   Terry invited Austin out to his family's favorite place in the 'backstreets' (nod to Springsteen) of Montauk where they played pranks on the older brothers, did some pool hopping, and boarded in the surf near the Point by moonlight. 

 Good times...we are so fortunate to have enjoyed many wonderful moments with Terry and your family.

It’s hard to express how sorry I am to hear of Terry’s passing.  My earliest memories of Terry go back to comedic banter during recess in elementary school.  In the following years, thanks in large part to the friendship between our families, we shared trips to the mountains and to the beach.  One summer, the Hobbes were kind enough to have me join them at the Montauk beach house.  During that visit, we kids were chased out of a nearby motel for sneaking into their pool, put sand in an older brother’s bed (it may have been Patrick.. my delayed apologies), and went boogie boarding at night among other things.  Despite some harmless mischief, Terry never seemed to have a bad word to say about anyone and his sense of humor was second to none.  My sincerest condolences to the family and everyone else who had the pleasure of knowing Terry.

I am a registered nurse at Peconic Bay Medical Center and I had the pleasure of taking care of the Hobbes family for a period of time. Terry, as well as his family, left such a lasting impression on myself and the facility, I constantly wonder how he is progressing and pray for his recovery. Terry crossed my mind just today and I googled his name to unfortunately, come across this obituary. I was hoping to see a positive update on the GoFundMe site instead.

  To Janine, children and family- the love in your family was so apparent and beautiful, you all encouraged Terry everyday to heal while showering him with love. I pray your strong family can get through this time and know that Terry is forever with us all. That twinkle in his eye is unforgettable. Thank you for leaving such an impression on my heart and god bless you.

Like his siblings, Terry always struck me as smart and good-hearted. When we were kids, he and my brother were always coming up with some kind of adventure, and I'm thankful they were both able to enjoy the kind of trusting friendship that could be a model for future friendships. My deepest condolences on Terry's passing.

Our memories of Terry and the Hobbes family start early, when our kids were just starting out in school. Logan and Ryan were babies at the first annual Easter egg hunt. Every year we took part in traditions such as EasterEgg hunts,  4th of July parades, Halloween, and Father Joe soccer. You and Terry were always so kind and generous to our family.  Our memories of Terry will always be filled with his warmth as human being, that shows his true character. Janine, Sara, Jillian and Ryan, There are no words to describe how very sorry we are that Terry lost his battle with this terrible virus. There are also no words to describe how much we loved Terry and admired his spirit. We always enjoyed our visits with Terry , bringing him his favorite donuts and pizza! I'll miss all the times he smiled when he saw me and said he loved me. I hope he knew how much we loved him and how much joy he brought to everyone who knew and admired him. First I would like to express my deepest condolences to Janine, your beautiful children, Kate & family.  As a family you all were part of Terry's recovery & all were so dedicated to his healing. I loved talking to Terry & asking him about his teaching career, favorite books etc.  At Thanksgiving I asked him what was his favorite part of the holiday was & couldn't stop laughing when his response was "boozin"! So I asked the 2nd question of, if you could drink what would it be? His response..."Jack" ! We would listen " the Boss" as we stretched & walked. At times I would just say "sing it Terry & he would start the next lyric of the song without missing a beat. Hearing him sing "brown eyed girl" at the fall festival was great! He brought a lot of laughter to the Brendan house with Allyson & Kate.  Gone way too soon. I will always remember him as the cool English Teacher that everyone wanted, the "Hobbes"♡ 

Dear Terry:  When someone asks what kind of son-in-law you were, these words come to mind:  loving, caring, thoughtful, funny and compassionate.  You brought tremendous joy to us, Janine, Sara Jillian and Ryan.  We cherish the memories we spent together on vacations.  You’re like a son to us and a great husband and father.  You even outbeat me in cooking!  Dad still says you made the best tomato sauce he ever had.  We will all be together one day and continue to share our love for one another. Janine,  I worked with your Dad for many years at Hazeltine and enjoyed his sharing of all the stories from him as you have grown.  I know that you loved Montauk working there in the summer time, where we now live full time.  

This has been an incredible journey for your entire family.  May you find peace and comfort in the wonderful memories you have created over the years and the fact that Terry is now in a good place right now.

We moved to Shoreham in 2007 - kids are young - join sports and you meet the parents. Some of these parents are now great friends and we all learn from one another about being better parents, better friends, and better people in general. Then there is Terry - we come to learn quickly everyone knows Terry and of course Janine. He quickly befriends you and immediately becomes someone we can strive to be like - a good parent, spouse and friend. He’s easy to talk to, he’s comforting, he makes you feel like you belong. He simply is an incredible man that we all lost too soon. We miss sharing drinks with him, laughing with him,  talking about our kids and hearing his take on situations because he was great at balancing it all. Most of all we simply just miss him! Shoreham and the world is losing a phenomenal man. You will never be forgotten.

You surely left your mark on this world.  You touched so many people in countless  ways as a grandson, son, brother, cousin, husband,  father, uncle, and friend to the lucky people who had the pleasure of being in your engaging, comedic and caring ways.

I was so sad to hear of Terry's passing my heart breaks for Janine, his children and the entire Hobbes Family. But what I would like to share is that when I think of Terry it brings a smile to my face and more often than not, laughter. That is become the majority of my memories are the "you can't make this stuff up" shenanigans that we had back in high school - which were great!!! How we show up in the world, who we touch, who we love that's our story. And Terry's was a damn good one. They say, "grief is love with no place to go". I hope for the Hobbes family and all who knew and loved Terry, they can find comfort in one another by sharing Terry's story. And in doing so may "the love with no place to go" circle back and be written into our own chapters as we move forward and bring him along. That is how we honor what was.

Not only were you such a special nephew but such a wonderful, caring person.You have always brought out the best in everyone- You were always so positive in every aspect of your life- You and your family shared a beautiful life together and will never ever be forgotten- I will remember on Sundays mornings when your mother-in-law and I would come see you at the Brandon House- we would always share laughs together over coffee and donuts(but we did not tell wifey about all the donuts and tates cookies) that was our secret- and you laughed when I told you we have to only mention the healthy food not the snacks-LOL- Terry, you will be missed more than words can say-will love you always-Aunt Lori and Uncle Joe
