Mrs. Una McGriff Flemings was born in Weimar, Texas on January 1, 1918. She was one of three girls and five boys born to Attoway Prince McGriff and Fanny Ellen McGriff. She grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from Prairie View University, where she met and married her college sweetheart Milton B. Flemings. They were married for sixty-two years. The marriage produced three children, Angel and twins, Milton Jr. and Rubye. Una's teaching career started in Gladewater, Texas, where she was a Home Economics teacher. The cities and her teaching assignments changed over the years because her family was constantly on the move. Her husband had a career in the army and that meant the family moved to new locations every three years. However, Una continued her advanced academic schooling and teaching. As hobbies she learned to water and oil paint, flower arranging and the art of Japanese doll making in Japan. She learned to cook authentic Ethiopian meals. Una was one of the founding women of the Suffolk County Chapter of AKA Sorority Theta lota Omega Chapter, and was always active with church obligations. Una started her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher, and through the years she became an elementary school teacher in Texas and Brooklyn, then a principal of an elementary school in Hempstead, NY and finally an interim Superintendent of Schools in Hempstead, NY, before she retired in 1981. She then spent one month lovingly driving her beloved grandchildren to their schools in Miller Place because their new home wasn't completed and they had no other transportation to school. In 1984 she moved to Austin, Texas with her husband Milton. They had a rich and rewarding life there, again being active in AKA Sorority and the Links, and making wonderful friends at St. James Episcopal Church. They moved again to New York in 2001 to live with their daughter and son-in-law. Her beloved husband passed away in March 2004. Una is survived by her beloved daughter Angel and son-in-law Charles Terry, daughter Rubye and son-in-law Ithiel Lloyd, grand-child Jarrett & grand-daughter-in-law Vernadean Lloyd and great-grand-son Jarrett J.
