Marjorie Ellen Avery Bakkila

Marjorie Bakkila, peacefully at her home in O'Hara Township, on January 14, 2018 .Born 7/27/1929 in Duluth, MN, daughter of William Donald and Dorothy (Williams) Avery. She was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Clark (Maury) of LaJolla,Ca and brother Dr Robert Avery ( Minnie ) of Pittsburgh. Marge is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Henry, her sons,Dr Hal Bakkila (Kathy), David Bakkila (Betsy Neidle), daughter Anne Jeffries of Hobe Sound, FL(Gordon) and grandsons Jacob (Emily),Sam, Curt and Alan and granddaughter Maggie, Marge attended Oberlin College, finishing her psychology degree at the University of Minnesota when she married Henry (they had had their first "date “at a school dance in Duluth when she was 14 and he 15) .They moved to Crosby, MN when Henry took a position with US Steel, where Hal and Dave were born, then to Virginia, MN where Anne was born. In 1963 the family moved to Ciudad Piar,Venezuela-a small mining town where Henry worked as an geologist .This began a great family adventure in scenic outdoor travel and Latin culture. In 1969 the family moved to Pittsburgh. During their marriage Marge and Henry also travelled to South Africa, Spain, France and England and lived for a time on Gag Island-in the far east of Indonesia with their dog Edgar. They were lucky enough to have visited all 50 States. Marge was a dedicated volunteer, with 57 years of service in PEO, a women’s philanthropic organization, and a past president of Chapter B, Fox Chapel, For 25 years Marge transcribed books into Braille, including additional training in mathematics with the Bower Hill Braille Association. Marge also volunteered at Beechwood Farms, where she reorganized the library, while Henry was a naturalist there. She loved nature, especially birds; they loved to go on "birding" expeditions near and far.Marge loved to read, especially American History, Marge loved dogs and she loved to knit, many magnificent sweaters and blankets survive her. She was a thoughtful and loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed by all of her family .A private memorial service will be held in the future. This is a beautifully written obituary, recording a beautiful life of a beautiful lady. David and I were privileged to call her "Friend" for more than 50 years and "Neighbor" for a good many of those years. We grieve for Henry, Hal, Dave, Anne and their families.
