Carl J. (“John”) Newquist passed away the morning of Friday, February 17th, having lost a final battle with cancer and other ailments at age 81. Avid hunter, private fishing boat captain (“Gone at Dawn Charters” running two weeks a year out of Lake Michigan), wildlife expert, golfer, reader, and adventurer. But he loved being a lawyer. Over his lifelong legal career as a prosecutor and general practitioner specializing in criminal defense, he represented the cities of Fridley and Hilltop, MN, as well as countless thankful clients whom he successfully defended in court over the years. Awarded a “Key to the City” by Hilltop, which also officially named November 19th, 2018 “Carl J. Newquist Day” in appreciation for his decades of expert legal services dating back to 1971. Prior to retirement, much of his career was spent as founding and managing partner of Newquist & Ekstrum Law Offices P.C. in Fridley. Carl managed his own law office with attorneys and staff in various forms for almost five decades, with the one constant being his Senior Paralegal, Patty Phillips, who assisted him in serving clients for 47 years. Carl was preceded in death by his mother and father, Norma and Carl. He is survived by his brother Ronald Edward; widow Jean Marie; sons Brian John and Daniel John; and his grandchildren Lauren and Noah (Newquist). Carl’s family and friends will celebrate his life in Minneapolis this summer.
