Born on January 1, 1959, Deng was a man of deep intellect and immense compassion. He earned his master's degree in International Law from the University of Kiev and dedicated his life to championing education and community empowerment. Deng was a respected leader within the Sudanese diaspora, offering guidance to countless individuals, including many of our aunts and uncles, whom he mentored as a teacher. His commitment to both his personal and professional endeavors reflected his values of integrity, kindness, and service to others.
In 1998, Deng and his wife made the courageous decision to bring their family to the United States, where they worked tirelessly to build a new life while remaining connected to their roots. He was proud to share his rich cultural heritage with others, always a source of knowledge, love, and support for his family and community.
Deng is preceded in death by his mother Rebecca Nyakuech, father Benjamin Deng Gai, and brothers Kur Gai and Mongoya Bol. He is survived by his wife Awein Manyok and their children: Bol, Lulu, Rebecca, Apio, Manuella, and Theyong; and siblings Martha (Apio) Bol, Mekalilie Bol, Angok Gai, and Philip Dongapar.
Though Deng's physical presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, knowledge, and service will continue to inspire and guide us. We take comfort in knowing that his work, his spirit, and the lessons he shared with us will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
