It is with a deep sense of loss and heartbreak that we announce the passing of Dr. Enrique Ospina, MD, a graduate of la Universidad del Valle Medico, in Cali Colombia. He did his residency in both Colombia and the University of Minnesota. On May 24th, 2026, Enrique passed away peacefully in the company of his wife of 62 years, Rae Anne Ospina. He was a beloved soul whose impact reached far beyond those close to him.
On May 15th, 1940, Enrique Ospina Malagon was born to Justo Ospina Garcia and Angelica Malagon de Ospina, in what was then, a small town, Zipaquira, Colombia. Motivated by his father’s self made achievements, Enrique built a remarkable life and forged a path for, not only himself, but his friends and family, through hard work and unwavering determination. He embodied the epitome of the American Dream.
In late 1963, while Enrique was living and attending the University of St. Thomas and working at St. Luke’s hospital, he met Rae Anne Johnson. She was working the switchboard at the hospital. They were married on June 6th, 1964 and one week later they moved to Cali, Colombia where he finished medical school.
In 1972 Enrique and Rae Anne returned to Minnesota where he started his journey as a husband, father and family practitioner of 30 years. It was during this time that he made a point of providing medical care to families with limited funds, children newly adopted from Colombia, members of the Spanish speaking community, as well as generations of families throughout Minnesota. A champion of improving the lives of others, Enrique participated and led several Latin American clubs, and associations in Minnesota and Florida.
More importantly, he was a loving brother, husband and father that felt great joy in providing his daughter and four sons with a robust education, a beautiful home, and a wide variety of activities that included sports, camping, bike riding, boating, downhill skiing and a deep love for a vast array of music. This desire to bring joy to an active life extended to his nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Enrique is survived by his loving wife, Rae Anne; his children, Ana Maria (David), Michael, Brian (Mandi), Jeffrey (Amy), and Jason (Gretchen); his grandchildren, Emily, Hayley, Timothy, Nicholas, Matthew, Isabella, Madeline and Jackson; and his siblings Myriam, Eduardo, Elvira and Marina.
He was preceded in death by his father, Justo Ospina Garcia, his mother, Angelica Malagon de Ospina, and his brother, Roberto Ospina Malagon.
To all that knew him and loved him, what will be remembered most is his warm, smiling, larger than life sense of humor and laughter that lit up the world around him.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Sunset Kapala Glodek Funeral Home, Minneapolis at 11:00 am with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.
