Floyd Calvin Meyer was born Mar. 9, 1923, in Beatrice, Neb., to George and Catherine Meyer. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force the following year. He served as a radio operator until his discharge in 1946.
Floyd married Evelyn Oberg, of Manistique, Mich., on Aug. 28, 1946, after a whirlwind courtship. Upon graduation from the University of Minnesota in 1950, he enrolled at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul. He graduated from there in 1954 and embarked on a 20-year ministerial career that took him and his family to Bridgeport, Conn.; Litchfield, Minn.; Yankton, S.D.; Great Falls, Mont.; and Kenosha, Wisc.
In 1975 he resigned from the pulpit ministry and, after completing a program in clinical pastoral education, was hired as chaplain at Friendship Village in Schaumburg, Ill., where he served until 1997. Floyd and Evelyn moved back to Kenosha in 2000, and after her death in 2008, he moved to Tucson, where two of his daughters live.
As a young man, Floyd played the tenor saxophone, and he retained a love of big band music throughout his life. He was an excellent singer, and one of his favorite activities as chaplain was to lead the annual Christmas carol sing-along. He will be remembered for his cinnamon candy, fierce Scrabble playing, pride in his automobiles, and unshakable love for his children and grandchildren.
Floyd is survived by six daughters: Nancy (Dave) Healy, of St. Paul; Jane (Tim) Hubbard, of Tucson, Ariz.; Carol (Doug) Sokolowski, of Gurnee, Ill., Colleen (Jake) Niccum, of Tucson, Ariz.; Lois (Carmelo) Bruno, of Pleasant Prairie, Wisc.; and Joyce (David) Olson, of St. Michael, Minn.; and by 16 grandchildren. Floyd is also survived by his sister, Dolores Meyer Eckstrom of Marysville, WA.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Central Baptist Church, 420 N. Roy St., in St. Paul, MN, with visitation beginning one hour before the service. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, in Minneapolis, MN. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to: Children’s Shelter of Cebu, P.O Box 247, Cambridge, MN 55008.
