John was born in 1928 in Zapotok, Slovenia, Yugoslavia. He lived there through a tumultuous time in history and stayed behind while most of his family left to eventually settle in Minnesota in the late 1940’s. In 1960 he joined his family in Minnesota where he found his calling as a small business owner of a gas station and auto repair shop with his brother Joe. This remained his profession until his retirement in 2000. In 1972 John took a giant leap, married the woman he loved, and instantly inherited a family of 9 children. He was a devoted family man and made sure his new family became his priority. He taught them how to ski (snow and water), to drive, and that hard work will pay off. If you needed help he was the first one to lend a hand. John and Elaine regularly spent 2 or 3 nights a week on the dance floor. They belonged to multiple square dance clubs and knew all the good places to kick up their heels. Dancing brought many people into their lives including lifelong friends Dick and Joanne Macko. They remained regulars at square dancing until about 5 years ago. John embraced the Minnesota tradition of “going up north” in 1967 when he built a cabin on Balsam Lake, WI. It was a hive of activity every weekend during the summer with his large extended family. If there weren’t enough beds, kids in sleeping bags would be found in every corner on the floor. He loved to teach them how to waterski and spent hours and hours towing them in the boat. John lived a long and eventful life and built memories with family and friends who will cherish those memories in future years.

Arrivederci, John. Vaya con Dios.
