

Robert was born on August 25, 1935, in St. Paul, Minnesota to William J. Montgomery and Stephanie (Jamiolkowski) Montgomery. Robert graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in 1953. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Donald, and best friend/brother-in-law Thomas “Tommy” Clemons, Sr.. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Deborah L. Gilbreath, married on November 24, 1966, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with five children: Matthew, Robert Jr. (Donna), DawnMarie, Mark, and his daughter Michelle (Martin). He has thirteen grandchildren: LaShyia Lane, Jordan, Bryce, Kayla, Ryann, and Ryleigh Montgomery, Bryce and Blake Montgomery, Lourdes “Sydney” and Lauren Otis, Megan, Marina, and Mackenzie Wesel, and great grandson Jonah Montgomery. He has three siblings: Lavonne “Duchess” Brock, Kathleen Clemons, Veronica (Billy) Clardy.
Robert joined the Minnesota Army National Guard for two years, followed by eight years in the United States Air Force before being honorably discharged. He was a journeyman carpet layer for 45 years and a 3M security coordinator for 23 years. A natural storyteller, Robert continued to bless the lives of all he encountered with timely lessons and impactful messages. His pride for his family and appreciation of life brought him joy each day. While he will be deeply missed, there is no doubt that his impact will live on in each of our hearts and minds.
A wake will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 AM officiated by Father Kevin McDonough, with Father Joseph Gifford. Both will take place at St. Peter Claver Church at 375 North Oxford Street, St. Paul, Minnesota 55104.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Allina Hospice at Lyngblomsten Care Center, St. Peter Claver Church, and the Alzheimer's Association in the name of Robert W. Montgomery, Sr.
