It is with the most confidence that I say “to know him is to love him.” 


It was the little things that I loved about spending time with Grandpa: watching TV on the couch, then silently listening to the jazz station when the show was over; him constantly telling me to smile, even when there was no one else in the room; and the stories and lessons he would so freely share with me, despite them being worth so much. His presence alone brought the most light and the most ease.


While he is and will be so dearly missed, Grandpa continued to make me realize how fortunate I am to have family I don’t ever want to lose. Thank you for living life with the most life, with the most joy. Thank you for always being in my corner, even when we’re miles apart. Thank you for the laughs, for the lessons, and for all of the love in the world. Love you always❤️

I loved how Mr. Montgomery  used to say to me, “Joey, let me tell you something….”  I loved his presence. 

First time I met Robert was at a Lynx game. He gave me a (jokingly) hard time about needing to shine my shoes. He wasn’t wrong. We talked for a bit—sometimes games can be stressful and Robert was a nice little break from it. I tried to stop by and visit most games after that and say hi. Robert told me stories about his time serving in the military, about his family, and other thing about his life. Every time I came by from then on I’d beat him to it and apologize for whatever (shoes not being shined, hair being messy, my shirt having a messy spot, etc.). “I’m so sorry, Robert. If I’d known you were going to be here I would’ve run a comb through my hair.” And he’d always laugh and say “let me tell you, you’re looking good”. Always made me smile. I’ll miss being able to stop by and see him. I didn’t know him super well outside of that , but sometimes I guess you don’t have to for people to still have a nice place in your memory. Robert was a good man and I will miss him, but very thankful for the time I did get.



I have had the great pleasure of knowing Robert for over sixty years. He was a true friend and big brother to me, who I will never forget. I will always remember the great talks we had together.  He was a very proud father, grandfather, and husband. To Debbie and family, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy.  

So very sorry to hear about Robert's passing. He was a lifelong friend. Always a good word for everyone. Always asked about my bowling and family.  Carpeted my home on Beam Avenue. The last time we got together was at Sam's Town and enjoyed the Buffet there.  May he find a friendly Keno game up above.  Will miss talking to him even though it was only once or twice every year.

I had the distinct pleasure of serving Robert and his wife Deborah as one of Robert’s physicians at Bethesda Hospital in St Paul and at the VAMC in Minneapolis.  As a physician, you are supposed to avoid having “favorite” patients but Robert was an exception in my practice.  Despite his formidable health challenges, Robert was always a gracious and dignified presence in the clinic and with Deborah as his dutiful attendant, we always seemed to get our work done.  I so enjoyed his stories and anecdotes that would cause us to drift from our agenda  but they served to bond us in our common purpose.  I could tell by Deborah’s “eye rolls” that she had heard these stories a few times before but she too was such a graceful and loving participant in the process.  I guess I should also tell the reader that, in addition to violating the “favorites “ rule of practicing medicine with Robert, I also violated the “never talk politics with your patient “ rule.  I think almost every visit included a discussion of political current events.  I think it helped that Robert and I agreed on most everything in this realm.

I know Robert’s family cherishes their memories of him and misses him dearly.  I do too.



Robert was a gem to all who knew him and to the community. When he’d see you, he’d get a big grin on his face and warmth in his eyes. When Debbie ran for St. Paul City Council, Robert welcomed a bunch of “kids” who were running her campaign into their house. We learned so much from him during that time and continued to do so every time we visited with him throughout the years. He was a wise man who taught us to always work hard. 

Robert was my patient from about 2017.  He was such a joy to take care of.  Every time I saw him - either in the hospital or in my clinic he would make a wonderful social event of it. Sure he might tell the same stories but they were great stories! He always said something to let you know he appreciated you.  He also always brought you in on the not so well kept secret that he was a man who had aged well - better than any of his peers.  But there was no arrogance or meanness in that. He would joke and wink and encourage you to  also shine like he did.  Robert loved to tell of his years of travling with Debbie -partly to say how he wanted to get back to that one day, but mostly to share his experiences.  When I told him that my family and me were planning our first trip to Hawaii, he beacame a wealth of informaiton on what we absolutely MUST do.  He was so proud when I showed him pictures demonstrating that -Yes- I'd done and eaten and drank his recommendations.  And they had been great recommendations! I think Robert and I had a connection because I had told him about my wife, who is a very accomplished surgeon.  I think he immediately recognized my pride in her as a mirror of his pride for Debbie.  So, in addition to everything else we had to discuss, we also got to confide and express that neither of us was really the most important in our family and that our duties were to support and promote that most important person.  His eyes would shine as he started that "Dr Faizer, you and I both know..." 
Debbie, I know that the last couple of years have been tough.  But those years helped many of us learn for ourselves what he'd been telling us all along - You are the Cat's Meow.  Probably that's the most important thing he wanted us to know and remember for him. Robert, your work is done. Rest in peace. 

One of my favorite memories of Robert is his generosity towards his parish of St. Peter Claver. On one occasion I went over to the church and found him washing the doors and windows near the front. He then took time to chat with me and tell a couple of stories of his life. I offer my love and sympathy to Debbie and family on their great loss. Blessings!

Robert was always willing to spend a few moments chatting when ever I saw him.  He was a friendly person and will be missed very much by all those who knew him.

Debbie - so sorry for your great loss!  Kevin knew Robert much better than I did, but the times I saw him he always had kind words, a hug and made me laugh!  I grew to love you both quickly, and he will be missed.  I'm so glad I got to know you both and I'm honored to call you friends.  Love to you and your family.

Recalling Mr Montgomery talking about his Cadillac back in the day .. was definitely someone who knew everyone and talked  to everyone and remembered everyone no matter what their role in life was. He seemed to embrace meeting people and getting to know them and always had a story to tell me about someone!

To sum up my professional life, I owe it to Robert.  Robert and I met in the fall of 1977 at the University of MN School of Dentistry.  Robert had been a veteran, not only of the Air Force, but also of the Air Force dental team.  Things did not go well and he remembered it in detail.  Robert and I met weekly for almost two years except on the weeks his schedule conflicted with mine.  I knew he'd be standing , leaning back against the windows.  The look on his face might not have been anticipation.  He was a patient patient even though I knew he hated every minute of our weekly two hour visits.  We ended up seeing most all of the departments in the school.  He actually had almost every major thing I needed to graduate, including some that had to be redone because his case was in an instructor's pocket of his lab coat.  Graduation came and Robert had a classic question.  "Where are you going now?"  When I said downtown St Paul, he responded, "Good.  I'm going with you.  I don't want anybody changing their mind in here"  He was patient with the white kid from Roseville.  My high school had two Black kids in almost 1800 students.  When asked what he was buying his wife for Christmas, he was subtle, " A nickel plated 38"  Casual as can be.  Of course I had no idea Deb was on the police force.  He just let it dangle there for awhile before he let me in on things.  So almost 45 years later, here I am.  Writing about a great guy who I will  always treasure hearing him say, "I might just call you "doctor" now"

I am so very sorry to hear about Roberts passing. You know how much i loved him and I am very sad. 

Robert leaves behind such good memories: 
- Staying at your house and meeting all your children. 
- The two of you visiting me in Vancouver.
- Skiing with you in Colorado and getting the two of your back down that hill. i think it took an hour. Robert told that story for years about   "going to the mountain" ( and surviving) How funny was that? 

Robert was the most charming man that I have ever met. He loved everyone and they all loved him back. He will be missed.

Robert always made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. He adored Debbie, what a wonderful man.  

Robert, I thank GOD that I had the opportunity to know you. You were the epitome of Black Male excellence and walking unapologetically in who you are (even when you’re giving folks the business - Lol). You and Debbie welcomed me and Aasim into your family with so much love and you taught me so much. I will forever be grateful. May you rest in perfect peace.

Robert always had a good story to tell about a life lesson. He would reel you in with a deep teaching and then have you crying laughing by the end. He would talk and make friends with anyone no matter the age or race. He will truly be missed. 

Robert was a father figure to me, always sharing words of wisdom, encouragement and support. I consider myself blessed to have had him in my life and to be called and treated like a daughter. His love lives on in the lives he touched! You are deeply missed - Renee Tyler or as Robert called me "Hey Sport."

I am a long time neighbor. 
Mr. Montgomery  would often walk through the alley on his way to church. From time to time he would stop if I was outside and we’d have a wonderful conversation. He would share his experience growing up in St. Paul, his time at 3M and much more. 
As I was pulling in my garage last Wednesday 4/27 or Thursday 4/28, I suddenly had a thought of him and those stories he would share. On Friday 4/29 I learned of his passing. I will cherish those memories. 
My deepest condolences to the Montgomery family. He was a wonderful person. Glad I had the privilege of knowing him.

I was Robert and Debbie next door neighbor. They welcomed me with open arms and friendship when I moved in.  During the summers Robert would sit with me outside and tell me his life stories, about his wonderful kids and how proud he was of his wife and children. How great a life he’s had. He would always tell me he had nothing to complain about he’s lived a happy life. And when ever I saw him in passing to go some where. My favorite memories of Robert is getting together with Debbie and Robert on Sundays for fried chicken and libations with Debbie as the bartender of the year.  While the food and libations was great the best part of each Sunday was the laughs and genuine love in the room.  Robert maybe physically be gone, but he will live with us forever.

Alexander/Montgomery 2016 Family Reunion.

My FAVORITE memory of my Uncle Robert is his relationship with my Father, his best friend.  The two of them went on numerous trips  together.  Their favorite trip was going to the dog track in Sioux City, Iowa.  During the 4th of July Holiday they bring back fireworks.   The Clemons and Montgomery families went on lots of vacations together such as, skiing trips and Wisconsin Dells.  We also went on lots of picnics and went boating together. Not only were my Father and a Uncle close, our families were close too.

I will always have fond memories of Robert sitting behind us at Church. As a young family with four little ones it was sometimes a challenge to be at mass. Robert often commented on how great it was to have people bring their kids to church. It was very encouraging. I think we often sat in the same place at the back of church hoping he would come in and sit behind us. He was a wonderful role model of a husband and father. We were fortunate to know him and heaven is lucky to have him.

What a strong, warm and wonderful man.  Robert always made me feel a part of his family with the biggest, warmest bear hugs I've ever received.   He will certainly be missed.   All my love and prayers for the Montgomery family.  Holly DeSantis and Family.

What a wonderful man!  I can still see the gleam in his eye when he spoke of his children so 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild must have really been a joy for him.
