We crossed paths briefly; both of us as instructors for the ATC FACMAN course in Millington.   Dean shaped our thinking in positive and practical ways, and the days went by quickly, always ending on a positive note.    

In an effort to keep spirits up through the tedious curriculum, Dean instituted an exercise routine at the end of the day.  We ran in formation and chanted along the way, a bunch of older sailors and officers.  It worked, students stayed positive and enjoyed it all.  I was asked by DCNO AW/ATC how we had gotten permission to do mandatory PT for our students, all officers and senior enlisted.   Dean chuckled in the background while I tried to explain that we hadn't bothered to ask.

An extraordinary gentleman, he was a help and an encouragement to my wife and me, personally and professionally.  Our thanks and condolences to the family for this great fellow, a good man.

My mother, Irvine Dean, and I were shocked to hear about Dean.  I knew Dean more when we were both kids growing up and only had the occasional meeting after he retired from the Marines.  All my memories are positive, of playing and having fun, of teasing each other,  I wish we could have spent more time together.

We are so saddened to hear about the passing of Dean.  In the short time we had gotten to know him he taught us so much.  We were fortunate enough to be able to attend one of the Marine Core dinners a few years back in Chilliwack.  Still to this day we have not laughed, cried, felt heartache and joy so much as we did that day.  My heart goes out to you Shirley, I know how much he meant to you and I can only imagine the loss that both you and Shawn are feeling.  Lots of love, Dean and Nikki Malow (Mission, BC)

I met Dean when he was a GySgt working for me at MCAS Yuma. Cannot begin to explain how great a Marine, Father and Human Being he was and how much he made my job easier. It is not often that one can pick out those Marines that he as met - who stand out as one of our best. Dean was one of those. 
One of my dreams was to attend a Marine Corps Birthday with the 49th Marines to both visit with Dean and Shirley and experience what has become a wonderful tradition for Marines in SW Canada. Perhaps next year Melissa and I will be able to do that.

I had the pleasure of working with Dean while assigned as course supervisor in ATC advanced schools. I retired in 89 but Dean and I remained in contact all these years either by Christmas cards or facebook. I remember the first Christmas card after his retirement offering to teach me how to fish if I would come to Canada. I will miss this life long friend very very much as most all who knew or even got to meet him. Shirley and family please except My and My wife Ann's deepest condolences for all the family's loss.

My father, Nick, loved the 49th Marines and Dean.  My entire family has been blessed by this connection and Dean's immeasurable assistance and support.  Our deepest condolences for your sudden loss.

Honor, Integrity, Commitment. These were the words that I saw Dean Storey live by. I will  miss this friend whom I knew for far too short a time. God's peace to him and his family that he loved above all else.

Dearest Shirley, I was so sad to hear of Deans passing.  I am sorry that I couldn't be there for you, but you are in my thoughts and prayers.

On learning of President Roosevelt's death, his successor, Harry Truman, told reporters, “ . . . when they told me yesterday what had happened, I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”   Dean's courage and fortitude as a youth I knew in Viet Nam; his commitments to family and to principles remained in his person because they were not fleeting, like youth.  

May your seasons of grief be tempered with belief that God is merciful, and spared Dean as a youth to become a man who made us better people today, or who gave us life itself.  Please accept my sympathy, and apology for being unable to make the trip.

I had the privilege to work for Top Storey at ACA1 Schools, Millington, TN in the late 80's and he made a huge impression on this sailor.  He was the epitome of a Marine.  He was fair, but firm and one always knew where they stood with him and what he expected; nothing less than 100% and outstanding performance.  He embodied honor, courage and integrity.  To his family, my heartfelt sympathy for your loss and may his memories provide some comfort at this most difficult time.

I was stationed with Dean Story in the middle 1980's while at NATTC Millington TN... he was the Leading Chief of the Air Traffic Control A-school and a close personal friend.  I could not find any better Marine in my 34 + years in the service than Dean. He cared about the instructors and students both Navy and Marine Corps. He always expected the highest performance and moral standards. Semper Fi my old friend.. our paths will cross again some day.

Shirley, Sean and Family I am deeply sadden by the news I have heard today and I am so sorry for your loss.Dean was an amazing person and both Doug and I respected him deeply and thought of him as a great friend. If you need anything please let us know.

Shirley, Shawn and family, It was a great shock to hear of Dean's passing. His energy, enthusiasm, and zest for life made him seem indestructible. As Dean's platoon commander for part of his tour in RVN, we shared many fox holes together after I made him my radio operator. His maturity, calmness and intelligence made my job a lot easier. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and you may be assured his memory will always remain with those of us who served with him.

Dear Shirley, Shawn and family,   I am so saddened to hear of Dean's passing.  We will all miss him but I know the gates of Heaven are graced by his presence.  Dean made us all more proud to be Marines.  I will be there with you in spirit at his memorial service but will be at a long planned family reunion in OK, as we celebrate the 100th birthday of my aunt, my mother's sister.

A Marine's Marine, Dean was larger than life. He lived the ethos of the Marine Corps every day, a straighter arrow you will not find. Go in peace my friend, for you will be missed and remembered.
