October 4, 1940 – February 5, 2024
With wife Helga and family by his side, Eugen Wittchen passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Errock, BC, on Monday February 5, 2024. Eugen (Eugene, Gene or Geno) was 83 years of age and the cherished husband of Helga through 57 wonderful years of marriage.
Beloved father of Stephen (Ann Marie), Linda and Michael.
Son of the late Reinhold Wittchen and the late Marie Pahl, stepson to the late Evangeline.
Loving brother of Helga (the late Arnold), the late Victor (Eileen), the late Hulda, and step-brother to the late Manfred (Maria) and the late Eva (the late Otto) and brother-in-law to Erika (the late Dieter).
He was also loved by many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.
Born in 1940 in Jekaterinowka, Romania, he was raised in Germany until the age of 16 when he immigrated to Canada with his family settling in Prince Rupert, BC. At the age of 22, he went for an extended visit back to Germany and while there met Helga and they returned to Canada to build a life in southern Ontario.
Alongside his wife, Helga, they raised their family and developed many friendships in Caledonia, Ontario. Eugen worked at Union Gas in Hamilton for 33 years. Being a member of the German Baptist Church in Hamilton, Eugen enjoyed singing in the men’s choir. His lovely baritone could accompany many of the oldies, both in English and German, either on the radio or record player, and frequently in duet with Helga for many a birthday phone call.
He had a competitive nature and thoroughly enjoyed watching and playing sports (especially Fussball) and playing card games (especially Euchre). Throughout his life, he and Helga enjoyed travelling, and made numerous trips within Canada and to Germany, to stay connected with family and friends. In retirement, Eugen and Helga moved to the lower mainland in British Columbia, where Eugen loved to go for walks with his grand-doggies and chat with people along the way. Eugen always had a smile on his face, a great sense of humor and an ability to effortlessly strike up a conversation, making it easy to like him the moment you met him.
Eugen will be dearly missed by his extended family in Canada and Germany and many close friends.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no formal ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Eugen loved nature and animals.
To celebrate Eugen, we encourage friends and family to share their memories and photos below on the funeral home website. Thank you for being a part of his life.
