Geraldine was born on February 24, 1942 in Ladysmith, BC where she grew up with her nine siblings. She married Murray Gilks on October 8, 1960 and moved to Youbou, BC where she soon after, started her family and lovingly raised her children. The family moved to Mission, BC in 1975 and she divorced in 1992. Family was the key to her heart and she was over the moon when she became a grandmother and great grandmother and enthusiastically attended all family events. After her divorce, she lived the remainder of her life by herself and never remarried. She was very independent and a very strong woman, always wanting to do the things that needed to be done by herself. These past eleven years became a struggle for her, she suffered a heart attack in 2008; in 2014, her heart began failing her and soon after developed congestive heart failure and in 2018, she overcame a brain aneurysm. She had a strong will to live, never asking or wanting anything from anyone and would tell her family “I can take care of and want to live by myself. “ Even up to her death, her inner strength and strong will for life was evident. She wanted to do this her own way and in her own time. We, her family, are so grateful to have had that time with her, keeping a vigil both night and day until she left us. She is at peace and we will be forever grateful for the life she lived and for the life she gave. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister is at peace now; Forever in our hearts and never forgotten. A Celebration of Life will be in our mother’s honour on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Cedar Valley Mennonite Church. 32860 Cherry Avenue, Mission BC.
We would like to thank the staff of the Mission Memorial Hospice for lovingly taking care of our mother in the short time she had with us. As well, the Woodlawn Funeral home for their support in helping and guiding us through this very difficult time.
