It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Bostock. Roy passed away peacefully at 92 years of age on July 12, 2024, at the Abbotsford Regional General Hospital, in Abbotsford, BC, Canada with his loving daughter, Katy by his side.
Predeceased by his wife, May in November 2006, Roy is survived by his children; Jenny (and Michael) Catton, Katy (and Glenn) McTaggart, Russell (and Deirdre) Bostock, his grandchildren; Declan (and Asia), Ciaran, Éoghan, Diarmuid, Orfhlaith, and his nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, England and Wales.
Roy was born in New Houghton, Nottinghamshire, England on April 10, 1932. He began his working career at age 13 as a welder, then entered the Derbyshire Constabulary where he embarked on his lifelong career as a police officer. Roy emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada from England with his wife, May and 3 young children in April 1963 where he served with the Winnipeg Police Service until his retirement from the police force in December 1994. Roy is credited with beginning community policing in downtown Winnipeg as he walked the beat in Osborne Village.
In 1998, Roy moved to Mission, BC, Canada with his wife and daughter and enjoyed every moment, saying every day was like a holiday. Wanting to give back to the community, Roy began working at Mission Public Schools as a Noon Hour Supervisor looking after Elementary school children; his police experience, caring nature and sense of humour gaining him admiration from the students who took great delight in hailing him whenever they saw him in the grocery store on weekends.
Roy was also a valuable member of St. Andrew’s United Church Choir, his beautiful rich deep bass voice ringing out every Sunday morning. While he couldn’t remember all the words, his passion for singing, and singing to anyone, anywhere, and at any time, brought smiles to many people, friends and strangers alike.
He will be sorely missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
We would like to express our thanks to the caring staff at the Abbotsford Regional General Hospital, Worthington Pavillion and Maplewood House for the kind and compassionate care they provided to Roy in his final years and days.
A funeral service to commemorate Roy’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 33027 Second Ave, Mission BC on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 2:00pm with a tea to follow.
At his request in lieu of flowers, Roy’s daughter, Katy is setting up a Scholarship Fund in his name for students in Mission School District #75.
