Anita was born on September 14, 1938, in McAllen to her loving parents, Marcelino Vela and Anita Gonzalez. She was one of several siblings, all of whom, along with her parents, preceded her in death. Anita was also preceded by the love of her life, her husband of 63 years, Andres Gomez. Together, they built a life full of laughter, hard work, family traditions, and deep devotion to one another.
Anita’s legacy lives on through her large and loving family. She is survived by her devoted children: Flavio (Velma), Cynthia, Antonio (Mirtha), Maricela (Sergio), Arnulfo (Irma), Aleida (David), Beth (Anabel) and Louie, as well as a dear family friend, Rebecca Romeros. Her pride and joy were her 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her stories, her strength, and her spirit.
A woman of remarkable character and grace, Anita was known for her warm heart, her courage, and her unwavering dedication to her family. She was the very definition of a devoted wife and mother—keeping a beautiful, welcoming home and never letting a day end with a dirty kitchen. Her cooking was a cornerstone of family life, with her mashed potatoes and homemade tortillas bringing comfort and joy to every gathering.
Anita was an avid reader and lifelong learner, always with a book close at hand. She had a sharp mind and a playful sense of humor. A passionate sports fan, Anita never missed a football game—especially when Tom Brady was playing—and she loved baseball just as fiercely.
She also had a deep love for travel, and she and her family made unforgettable memories exploring the country. Some of her most treasured traditions were the holidays she spent in Reno, Nevada, where every Christmas and New Year's was filled with lights, laughter, and the spirit of adventure.
Anita’s strength, warmth, and fierce love for her family created a legacy that will endure for generations. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
