

Born July 13, 1933 to Anacleto and Amelia de Leon, Bertha dedicated her life not only to her family, but also to teaching and shaping the minds of students. She was a passionate educator who believed in the power of knowledge and the importance of kindness. Her unwavering commitment to her students and community left a lasting impact that will be remembered for generations.
Bertha was a devoted wife to her husband, Heberto Garcia (deceased) and mother to Adrianne G. Rodriguez (Gilbert), Heberto Noel “Tito” Garcia (Elizabeth), and Patricia “Patty” G. Ramirez. She found immense joy in being a grandmother to Eric X. Rodriguez, Steven M. Rodriguez, Lauren E. Garcia, Janeira Benjamin, Matthew Ramirez, and Sarah R. Pineda, as well as a great-grand mother to all of whom she cherished dearly. She was the heart of the family—always offering wisdom, love, and a warm smile that could brighten any room.
After graduating from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas in 1953 at the age of 19, Bertha began her teaching career in the San Isidro ISD and continued in the McAllen ISD. She was a sponsor to many school organizations such as Student Council, Spanish Club, History Club, just to name a few. Upon her retirement in 1990, she continued to teach part-time in the McAllen schools for three years.
Beyond her career, Bertha was a member of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in McAllen. She was actively involved in the Altar Society and served as President, Parish Council and was CCD instructor and coordinator. Bertha was also involved and served as an officer in organizations such as Delta Kappa Gamma, the Museum Guild- heading the Christmas Tree Forest, Palm Valley Association of Retired Teachers, and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
After losing her husband in 1997 and surviving cancer twice, she felt the need to become more dedicated to the Lord serving as a Lector and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.
She was an avid reader, a loving mentor, and a woman of great faith, She instilled strong values in her children and grandchildren, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, compassion, and education. Through her years of teaching, Bertha made a great impression on many of her students, some of whom continue to reach out to her to share their accolades. She enjoyed sharing stories of her experiences, offering guidance, and making cherished memories with those she loved.
Bertha’s legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher.
She will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
There will be a rosary held at Del Angel Funeral Home, 3611 N Taylor Road, Mission, Texas on Friday February 21, 2025 with visitation beginning at 3pm following with Rosary at 7pm. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday February 22, 2025 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 2209 Kendlewood Ave McAllen, Texas at 10 am following the internment at Valley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to an education-related charity in her honor.
Rest in peace, Bertha D. Garcia. Your love, compassion, wisdom, and strength will never be forgotten.
