

David Kenneth Olvera, beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend, passed away on October 7, 2025, at the age of 48. Born on January 31, 1977, in McAllen, Texas, David was the cherished son of the late Eleuterio Olvera and Emma Barrera.
A gifted musician, devoted friend, and passionate Longhorns fan, David lived a life full of creativity, connection, and adventure. He was known for his immense talent as a bassist and multi-instrumentalist, having recorded albums where he played every instrument and lent his voice to the music he loved. He was a founding member of the bands Unwed Fathers and Games in Theory, with which he toured extensively across the country, sharing his music and energy with countless fans and fellow musicians.
After graduating high school, David attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he forged lifelong friendships and became a well-known and well-loved presence on campus and beyond. His time in Austin was marked by musical collaborations, spirited conversations, and an ever-growing circle of friends who admired his wit, warmth, and generous heart.
David is survived by his brother Robert Olvera and sister-in-law Lisa, as well as his lifelong friend and "brother in spirit," Julio Mata. He also leaves behind a large extended family who loved him dearly: cousins Patricia Bazan, Cristina Cardenas (Joe), Eric Lee Olvera (Jakie), Alberto Olvera, Danny Olvera, Aliane Olvera, Jeses Corral, Micheal Mauricio (Angie), Samantha Lopez (Luciano), Marissa Figueroa, Daniel Barrera (Cynthia), and Jaime Barrera (Sylvia).
David was also dearly loved by his aunts and uncles: Jose Olvera (Lupita), Ricardo Olvera (Diana), Raul Olvera (Thelma), and Roberto Olvera. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eleuterio and Emma, as well as his aunt Estella Mauricio, and uncles Rogelio Barrera (Josefina) and Ramiro Barrera.
In addition to his human loved ones, David leaves behind his loyal cat, Otis, who was his constant companion and a source of comfort and joy.
David will be remembered for his deep love of music, his easy laugh, his welcoming nature, and his ability to bring people together. His presence in the lives of those who knew him was a gift — a melody that will continue to echo in the hearts of all who loved him.
