Eudocio (Ed) Garcia went to be with our Lord on August 2, 2023. Ed was born February 24, 1933, to Eudocio and Salome (Muñoz) Garcia. The second of five children, he was raised—along with his siblings Leonel, Humberto, Estella, and Hector—in Rio Grande City. He later was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Munich, Germany, and Fort Polk, Louisiana, before returning home and marrying his high-school sweetheart, Azucena (Susie) Elizondo, on August 11, 1956. Ed then reenlisted, and he and Susie went off to live an adventurous life. They found themselves in such locales as Munich and Nuremberg, Germany; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Ord, California; the Panama Canal Zone; Norton Air Force Base, California; and Fort Hood, Texas. Ed also served two hardship tours in Korea and Vietnam. After twenty-eight years in the military, he finally settled down in McAllen, Texas, with Susie, in 1981. He then started a new career with New York Life, working another thirty years as a life-insurance agent. Ed was a devoted family man to his children—Linda (Marc David), David, Jesse (Irma) and Fred Garcia—and a loving grandfather to his five grandchildren, Liana, Lauren, Sarah, Veronica, and Rebecca. Ed and Susie were together for sixty-six years until her passing in 2022. They enjoyed traveling (together, they saw Europe, the Holy Land, the British Isles, and Peru), photography, and spending time with family and friends. They were devout Catholics (Ed’s favorite expression was: “Thanks be to God!”) and active members in their parish, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, in McAllen. Ed was a former Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, a past president of the Serra Club, and a Grand Commander in the Order of the Alhambra, El Cid Caravan No. 106. He lived a life of gratitude, and life was gracious to him in return.
Ed is preceded in death by his wife, Susie, and his son David. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother and will be missed terribly by those who loved him—and so, so many loved him.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria del Angel, in Mission, on Tuesday, August 8th, from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M.
