Lillie Graham, a native of the Rio Grande Valley, passed away on September 6, 2023, answering the call to heaven. She was born in Mission, Texas, on July 31, 1932, to Cayetano and Petra (Alafa) Magallan, and she was the youngest of five siblings, all of whom she has now reunited with in the eternal embrace of heaven.
Lillie's journey took her from her hometown of Mission to Lubbock, Texas, where she met and married the love of her life, Prentis Walter (Dub) Graham, in 1953. Together, they shared many years in Lubbock until Dub's work led them to Lake Charles, Louisiana. After enduring a few hurricanes, they returned to Texas, settling in Plainview. Tragically, Lillie lost Dub in 1967, but she courageously continued her journey back to the Rio Grande Valley, where she planted her roots in McAllen to be close to her cherished family.
Lillie's family rejoices in her reunion with her parents, husband Dub, and four siblings: Manuela Hinojosa, Albertina Magallan, Noe Magallan, and Oscar Magallan, along with her stepson Dell Graham. She is survived by her loving daughter, Sharlene (Graham) Polvado, and three adoring grandchildren, Michael Barajas, Steven Barajas, and Kaitlyn Polvado, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A beacon of determination, Lillie, despite being a single mother, pursued her education, graduating from Pan American University as a registered nurse. She dedicated 25 years of her life to Edinburg Hospital's Women's Unit, where her compassionate care and commitment to excellence shone brightly. Lillie's influence extended beyond her nursing duties, as she mentored colleagues and served as a clinical instructor for aspiring nurses. Her passion for nursing led her to sponsor nursing students, covering their tuition and books to ensure their success.
Lillie's pride and joy were her grandchildren, and her unwavering love and support were evident at every game, school event, and concert they participated in, whether near or far. She was their dedicated "Grandma," always in the stands, cheering them on.
Lillie Graham's legacy is one of faith and unwavering strength, a testament to her love and resilience. She leaves behind a multitude of friends and relatives who cherished her, each holding fond memories close to their hearts. Special gratitude is extended to her dear friend, Joann Filippi, for her unwavering support, and to the dedicated doctors and nurses at Edinburg Hospital, who shared a bond with Lillie that will never be broken.
While we mourn her passing, Lillie will never be forgotten. A viewing will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, at Del Angel Funeral Home in Mission from 4 pm to 8 pm. A prayer service will take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at 12:00 pm, honoring Lillie with the RGV Nurses Honor Guard.
