

Judge Nickolas S. Barrera, 83 passed away peacefully on May 27, 2012 in McAllen, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife Emma, son Dennis and grandsons Christopher Pennington, and Matthew Barrera. He is survived by his son, Nick Jr. and wife Brigitte, son Ronald, daughter-in-law Mary Barrera, daughter Deborah and husband Robert Pegram, daughter Mary Ruth and husband Kelly Reed, daughter Nannette and husband Robert Kyle, one nephew Jessie, 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Nick was born in Flint, Michigan, and raised in Galveston, Texas where he met his wife Emma, also from Galveston. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1948-1949, and then with the U.S. Marine Corps as a point man in Korea during the Korean War from Sept. 1950-1951.
A graduate of the University of Houston, he then graduated from the South Texas College of Law in 1967. He proudly served as assistant District Attorney with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for ten years.
In 1977 he was named Judge of Harris County Criminal Court-at-law No. 2 by the Harris County Commissioners Court. His love for the judicial system and rights of others was always in his heart until the last day. After serving as judge he gave back to the community working Pro-Bono on weekends for those who were less fortunate. He retired to McAllen, Tx where he continued in private practice.
He was a long time member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and upon retirement a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McAllen. A member of the American Bar Association as well as The Mexican American Bar Association, The American Legion, The Alhambra, Knights of Columbus and Lulac.
Visitation will begin Wednesday May 30, 2012 from 4pm till 9pm with a rosary at 7pm at Funeraria Del Angel, 3611 N Taylor Rd, Mission, TX . Procession will depart the funeral home Thursday May 31, 2012 at 9:15 am for a 10 am mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Interment to follow in Valley Memorial Gardens.
