She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother; the ‘life of the party’ to family and friends, dancing to her heart’s delight every chance she had; the soul of her home to her closest loved ones. To her daughters and granddaughter Norma was their staunchest supporter, their rock, their strength, their inspiration. She empathized with her girls and always had words of wisdom for them. Her daughters’ friends, who lovingly referred to her as MamaLama, were always welcome in her home. She loved big gatherings with her family on holidays or just because.
Born on June 5, 1955 in Edinburg, Texas, Norma was raised in Mission and McAllen, graduating in 1973 from McAllen High School. She worked at local banks early in her career, in McAllen and Fresno, California, then later worked for Tulare County, California, charged with providing financial aid to foster families. When the family returned to the Valley, Norma worked with the Department of Health and Human Services. She retired several years ago to devote her time and energy to her family. She will be sorely missed.
Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Gustavo and Estefana Garza. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Silverio Lamas Jr.; her daughters, Stefanie Marie Lamas, Amanda Nicole Lamas, and Andrea Monique Lamas; her granddaughter, Micaela (Mikkie) Janae Lamas; her brothers, Gustavo Garza Jr., Roel (Aleyda) Garza, Eloy Garza, and Carlos (Liza) Garza; her sisters, Bertha Garza, Faviola Garza, and Carmen Garza, and numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be held at Del Angel Funeral Home in Mission on Monday, May 10, 2021. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with the rosary beginning at 6:30.
