Elvira Alonso Soto, age 85, of San Diego, passed away on November 12, 2022. She is survived by her husband Jose Humberto Soto, age 86, her four children (Yvette, Walter, Alexander and Yvonne) and two grandchildren (Hudson and Serafina) who made up the entirety of her world.
Elvira was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba on April 14th, 1937, to Laura Silvia Mir and Antonio Rosendo Alonso. During her academic years, Elvira studied Architecture at the University of Havana as well as abroad at the University of Chicago. Eventually, Elvira became the only female to lead the ground architecture and land surveying of several important sites, one of them being Fidel Castro’s family retreat which influenced her passage to the United States due to her anti-Castro political views. She relocated to the United States in 1963, where she continued her work in architecture while studying at Louisiana State University before focusing her efforts as a full-time mother to her growing family.
Elvira was an avid cook, creating meals that blended with her Cuban heritage and self-taught Creole recipes. Her love for flowers was always evident by her well-kept garden of over a dozen rose bushes. Elvira was intelligent, talented, humorous, and beloved by everyone who knew her.
Elvira never wanted to be the center of attention, so her services will be private for immediate family members only. Friends wishing to honor Elvira are invited to make a donation to the Elvira Alonso Soto Hispanic Women in Architecture Scholarship fund.
