He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 11, 1936 to the late Samuel and Gertrude Amsterdam Glick. At the age of 10, he moved to Los Angeles, California. Most devotedly, on May 10, 1956, he met and fell completely in love with Barbara Marilyne. They married on November 18, 1956, and he loved her consummately every day since. He was only 3 months away from celebrating their milestone 70th Anniversary.
Gary grew up selling papers and working in his family’s delicatessen, Purity Deli. He served in the United States Army as a young man, and thereafter settled down as a manufacturer's representative for 30+ years. He sold items such as belts, wallets, and gloves to major department stores, travelling far and wide across Southern California.
He had an interest in most sports, but his favorite was baseball. He was a longtime superfan of the Chicago Cubs. He ran his entire life, until he famously started walking at least three miles everyday, during which he would check on the neighbors, converse with everyone he passed, and try to make every person smile. He travelled with his family to more than 20 countries, from Germany to China, and he loved all-beef hot dogs, scotchmallows, and Frank Sinatra.
When asked how he’d like to be remembered, his response was “happy to have been here.” His life philosophy was love and happiness—he found the good in everything and everyone, led with unconditional acceptance, and always chose joy, curiosity, and respect. More than anything, he loved his wife and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older sister, Honey Glick Cooper, older brother, Richard Glick, and best friends of 50+ years, Mike and Marsha Fuerst.
He is survived by his treasured wife, Barbara Glick; 3 sons, David, Reed, and Robert Glick; 9 grandchildren, Shane, Jeffrey, Brent, Summer, Alex, Danielle, Riley, Jordan, and Tyler Glick; 4 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Claire Glick, London Henry, and Ray Schuff, with 1 more on the way; and numerous daughters-in-law, step grandchildren, and chosen family members. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community, who will continue to celebrate his legacy through humor, love, and turning strangers into friends.
