Such a warm, funny, kind and passionate man. His unwavering love of the Lord always impressed me and so much so, it’s  still fresh in my mind after 35 years. By happenstance I stumbled upon this notice of his passing. John was a fine man. Beth and his sons are in my thoughts.

It's impossible to capture the impact you had in my life for so many decades.  From being a part of your medical practice for 17 years and mentoring me with my doctoral studies and private practice, to bringing Garry and me together, being married in your home, all of our family vacations and just being a treasured and loved friend for so many years.  I will cherish all of these memories and so much more that you brought to my life.  You were so great at bringing many laughs and smiles to all who knew you.  And I am indebted to all those thought provoking discussions about the Gospel and life that we had.  It is with so much honor, gratitude and love that these sentiments are being expressed.  Rest well and I look forward to many more conversations with you in His Kingdom.

John was a great classmate.  We went to gym together where he consistently kicked my ass -- I still do some of the exercises he showed me.

Well this was quite a run by someone who never knew how to stop: from washing everyone's cars in your immediate family every Saturday, coaching Little League teams including pitching endless hours of bating practice over the years, emptying your dishwasher every morning at 3:00 a.m. followed by working on yesterdays files in your family room and then off to the hospital to wake up your patients, ask a lot of questions, including "how are you sleeping", sometimes even get in a quick free lunch at the Doctor's lounge in the hospital saying to me not to make eye contact and try to look like a doctor, and at the end of your work day, look in on the kids who had many times been asleep for hours. You taught me so much about life. some of your more famous sayings: don't worry, its fixable, One out of every one of us is going to die one day, this isn't going to hurt, and yes I washed my hands right before I came in this examining room. John I'm going to miss you so much, but we know how your broken body couldn't last another day I love you more than ever and plan on seeing you again in heaven one day with your new body. Ron

I met John Coon when I was a first year medical student at UC Irvine.
John was gone for the summer in Washington state at another hospital.  His instructions to the housing department were “Move anyone into my apartment - his psychiatric roommate was vacating - EXCEPT another medical student.”
Fortunately for me, those instructions were not followed, and a lifelong friendship began in the late summer of 1970.
John was obsessed with becoming a fabulous Marcus Welby type family physician, and his goal was realized. I watched his passion for medicine up close & personal. John helped me learn surgical knot skills with gloves & soapy water. He was always trying to help me become a better doctor.
John was responsible for two (2) of my greatest life achievements - meeting my wife Barbi & starting a 46 year career in emergency medicine.
I consider John to be one of my 5 closest friends, and he was always there for me - anytime that I needed advice, comfort & consolation for a sad time, or just to reminisce about our friendship & times together.
His wife Beth & 3 sons were blessed to have such a wonderful man lead their family.
So long, John.  
See you in Heaven.
