Joe and I were teachers together at Lawndale high School for 10 years, taught students who were deaf or hearing impaired, and became good friends. He was a decade older than I, and gave me much useful advice over the years, especially in investing. He was a good man. He cared about others, and set a good example for the younger teachers. My father, Jack Kelley, was a friend of Joe from his time in Cincinnati.  He drove Joe to Chicago to catch the train to California when Joe moved west. They exchanged letters for a half-century until Dad's death in 2009. By coincidence,  I now live near Binghamton, NY, where Joe spent some time in childhood. My condolences to Joe's family.


Joe was a kind-hearted man. He was more than a friend to me. His stories about his childhood in NewYork, his dance lessons, and his swimming were always the best to listen to. I usually called Joe to check up on him. I last saw him in the first week of March. He was his usual self and upbeat about life.  But since then I had been trying to reach out to him and check up on him as a friend. Only for me to find out on this website that he is gone. My trusted friend is gone without saying goodbye to me or me knowing what exactly happened. I am heartbroken but I pray and hope that he is in a better place. Wherever you are now always remember me Joe, your friend Robert. 

My dear Cousin Joey,
I will miss our long talks.  (You did most of the talking).  You gave solid advice and I appreciated it.  I will especially miss hearing about your adventures in Brooklyn.  Your exploits there were priceless.  They were especially fun to hear when they included my mother.  Lord knows she would never have spilled the beans the way you did.
May God hold you in his loving hands.

My cousin.  A fine man.  A gentleman in every sense of the word.  A kind man, a caring man and with a wonderful sense of humor.  My mother and Joe were close, and remained close all their lives, often remembering stories of growing up in Brooklyn and laughing as they recalled those past events.  These past few years, I often spoke with Joe on the phone and even though he might be in the middle of something, once I was able to steer the conversation to growing up in Brooklyn, the conversation would continue for an hour or more.  What a memory!  Joe, I am grateful for all the good advice you gave me and I promise to go to all those places you were so anxious that I see.  Rest in peace.

My cousin and BONUS- Godfather. I only saw him a very few times, yet he was a large part of our family. Distance in miles; not in thoughts, hearts or minds. All of us so proud of our family's first PhD! The most generous man on the planet with his time and care; to those in need, family and friends alike. These last few years I enjoyed hearing of my dad's exploits as a teen/young man as much as Joe enjoyed the telling. Peace to you, dear Cousin. Square dance instructor to the Angels.
