OBITUARY

Odette Habib El Kateb

February 11, 1924February 11, 2021

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother Odette Habib El Kateb, age 97 of Mission Viejo, on her birthday, on February 11, 2021.

Odette was the daughter of the late Jeanne Chalhoub and Habib El Kateb and beloved wife of the late Tewfick Bittar. Much loved mother of Soraya Bittar (Bahaa Ragheb) in Canada, Salwa Saheb in California, and Ghada Bittar (Fritz Sacher) in Austria. Cherished grandmother of Carole Ragheb (Shawn), Gracy Ragheb, Thomas Saheb (Lisa), Christina-Lynn Saheb, Brian Saheb, and Marie-Christine Sacher. Great grandmother of Nicole, Lucas and Céleste Woods in Canada and Tyler and Jordan Saheb in Texas. Dear sister of Josephine Codsi in Syria and the late Olga, Elie, Antoine, Joseph, and Habib El Kateb. She was the beloved aunt of Alexandre, Samir, Maye, Lina, Fadia, Naila, Elena, Amine, Antoine, André, Charles, Carla, Pascal, Philippe, and the late Elias and Dominique.

Odette was born and raised in Damascus, Syria and completed her education at “Les soeurs de Besançon”. She married her beloved husband Tewfick in Damascus, then they started their life happily together in Cairo, Egypt, where they raised their 3 daughters. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on December 20, 1978. Tewfick passed on January 17, 1979. Odette moved to California in 1995.

Odette was an angel who was always praying the Rosary for everyone, her family, her friends, her neighbors, anyone who asked her to pray for them and for those in need of prayers and had no one to pray for them. She lived beside the church so she could walk and attend the mass everyday. She used to enjoy singing the church choir hymns in many languages as she had a beautiful voice. Odette used to belong to the French Club and the Senior Knitting and Crochet Club where she made many beautiful crochet items for the Church Bazaar. She also enjoyed spending time in the garden and playing several games especially the Scrabble. She was a role model to her family in her unconditional love and attention. She always had the right words to say to strengthen their faith and trust in God during difficult times. She was wise and always thankful to God for any condition and in any situation. Her faithful heart was always reflected in her permanent attractive smile and positive attitude in life. She was strong through God working in her life and communicated her strength to her family. She enjoyed many pilgrimages to France, Croatia, Canada and Egypt. She always glorified God for the beauty of all His creation and was always thankful for everything.

I will miss Odette walking or stopping by the parish office to offer a mass for someone or just to say hi. Odette would always call me to wish me a happy birthday since we shared the same birthdate. I will remember her beautiful smile and will offer a Mass next year on her birthdate and death anniversary. Rest in peace my friend.

I have fond memories of tante Odette, remembering her beautiful voice as she sang the Lent song, ya Rab el kowat kon maana . I remember our adventures walking together to defend our common interest. It is hard to say goodbye but we share the same faith and hope that we will meet again. Our heartfelt condolences to dear Soraya, Salwa and Ghada. May tante Odette Rest In Peace and may the Holy Spirit fills your heart with comfort knowing that with Christ it is so much better. As tante Odette taught me union des prieres, we pray for all those who grieve her passing that they will be also comforted. Sincerely, Sherif, Silvana, Marlène, Hany and Christopher Mansour and Antoine Zaloum

I had the privilege to know odette the last year before she got sick. She added so much joy to my life. Loved every moment I spent with her. She was full of life. Her smile brightened up the room when she was in. She was a believer first and foremost. She prayed for me and for everyone who needed it. Her other favorite thing to do was to go to the garden where she lived and smell and pick the roses. We can all learn from that. Another thing about odette, anyone who knew her can testify to how great she always looked. She can never leave her place unless she looked all put together. She always kept her lipstick in her pocket just in case. I miss her terribly but very grateful for the time I had with her. Her laughter was contagious. She always tilted her head back when she laughed hard. Those are images I will never forget. Rest in peace odette with our lord.

To dear Odette, I liked your positive attitude and smiling face. Enjoyed our Sunday lunch meetings accompanied by your daughter Salwa and my Mom Eva. Also loved when you sang to us Christian songs, in Arabic and French. You were always so self conscient about your looks, (Coquette) it was cute. I was fortunate to have met you, You will be missed, Rest In Peace dear Odette
