aka Scottie Boy or Scottiepookins
Scott Cortes was born in Newport Beach, California November 2, 1990 and grew up in Anaheim Hills with his older brother Chris and parents Laurie and Steve. He attended Hillsborough private school pre-k through 2nd grade and then Crescent Elementary. He also attended El Rancho Junior High and Canyon High.
Scott was a very sociable youth and at a young age had many friends. He loved to have sleepovers and camping adventures with both his Cub Scout and Boy Scout friends. In Scouts, Scott developed a love for cooking and eagerly would share his skills when he came home. He attended numerous Scout camps and weekend overnights. He enjoyed learning archery, target shooting, river rafting and becoming an independent camper. He rose to the rank of Star Scout and continued many friendships beyond his Scout days.
He was adventurous and graduated from Razors to BMX bikes to mini-bikes and larger dirt-bikes. Even today his Honda Shadow motorcycle was his solution to the difficult parking at Cal State Fullerton.
Scott’s ADD hindered his academic career. After high school it took several years before he was ready to commit to college. Taking a few classes each semester he doggedly finished an AA degree at Orange Coast College and was thrilled to be able to transfer to Cal State Fullerton. Recently he applied for Spring 2021 graduation and paid his diploma and graduation check fee. He would have returned Aug 24th to finish his senior year and graduate in June 2021.
Throughout his life Scott has had several wonderful girlfriends who contributed greatly to his sobriety and encouraged his commitment to college. Despite his loyalty to them, Scott was always a charming, good looking young man and could always turn a head! For over four years, Stephanie Correa was his girlfriend, best friend and the love of his life. He purchased a beautiful engagement ring that he hoped to give her soon. However, the good Lord had other plans and called him home this past week on August 21, 2020. We have given the ring to Stephanie and hope she will wear and remember all the very best memories of Scott and stay engaged with our family.
Scott struggled with opioid addiction for close to ten years with numerous long periods of sobriety. His AA Home group in Costa Mesa, CA was a source of support through the years. He could always call on his sponsors and friends there, day or night. Their help, encouragement and friendship lengthened Scott’s sobriety, and his parents and family cannot thank them enough. To Austin, Antonia, Christian, Matt, Dylan and all the others who encouraged Scott along the road, you are amazing, generous friends. We hope many of you will speak at his Memorial (details to come) and share good memories of our beautiful boy Scott! Scott’s surfing friends will hold a paddle out for him in the next week or two and we hope to have a memorial service lined up for late September or early October. Details will be shared on Facebook pages Laurie Carlson Cortes and Scott Cortes.
You have left a huge hole in our hearts, we love you and will always miss you Scottie Boy!
