Harrison, affectionately known as “Chip,” was born on August 29, 1953, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Pearl and Harrison Johnson Sr. He remained a proud son of Southeast Texas throughout his life. Chip attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he stood out as a talented football player, and later continued his education at Lamar University, earning an associate degree in Drafting Technology. He went on to build a dedicated career spanning more than 40 years with DuPont (Koch), where his work ethic and reliability left a lasting impression.
Beyond his professional life, Chip was deeply committed to his community. He served for two years as a board member for the Beaumont Independent School District and as a trustee at his church. For over 30 years, he dedicated his time as a basketball official, beginning at the high school level and advancing to officiate NCAA Women’s Basketball. He also found great joy in coaching Little League baseball, where he encouraged, guided, and inspired countless young people, including his own sons. In addition, he personally trained his daughter in track, instilling discipline, confidence, and perseverance. Through his guidance and example, he raised three Division I athletes.
Chip was known for his strong presence. He could be direct and a bit bossy at times, but those who knew him best understood that these traits came from a place of deep care. He was kind, generous, and unwavering in his support for others. He loved people fully and showed up for them in meaningful ways. To many, he was more than a friend or mentor; he was a father figure. Throughout his life, he was often told how his example helped shape the lives of young men who looked to him for guidance, modeling their own fatherhood after what they learned from him.
Above all, Chip will be remembered for how deeply he was loved and how deeply he loved in return. His presence filled every room, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations.
He is preceded in rest by his parents, Pearl and Harrison Johnson Sr., and his older sister, Patsy.
