Kunjukunjamma was the beloved daughter of Late PM Mathai (Father) and Late Kunjamama Mathai (Mother), and the eldest of seven children, five younger brothers and one younger sister. She is survived by her siblings: MM Kunjachan (Brother), MM Thankachan (Brother), MM Thampi (Brother), MM Johnikutty (Brother), and Ponnamma Baby (Sister). She was preceded in rest by her brother, Late Baby M Mathew.
After completing her schooling, Kunjukunjamma chose nursing as her life’s work and moved to Durg, Chhattisgarh, in 1969 to complete her nursing training. Her first posting was at the Government Hospital in Balod, Chhattisgarh. For 14 years, she served there with steady dedication, and later continued her calling after being transferred to Arjunda, Chhattisgarh, where she served the community for another 23 years. In Arjunda, she was deeply loved and respected, known across generations for the care she extended so freely—so much so that the community affectionately called her “Didi,” a name that reflected the warmth, reassurance, and dignity she brought to those around her.
She married Mr. P. M. Koshy on April 17, 1972. Together they were blessed with four children; Daughter, Jaya Jiju (Spouse, Jiju John); Son, Jiju Koshy (Spouse, Emey Koshy); Son, Jinu Koshy (Spouse, Rajani Joseph); and Daughter, Sijy George (Spouse, Anil Chacko). Her family grew to include 12 grandchildren; Joyce John Mamman, Joel Koshy Mamman, Jovin John Mamman, Ivin Koshy, Eston Koshy, Isha Koshy, Evelyn Koshy, Chrislyn Koshy, Immanuel Koshy, Daniel Koshy, Alwyn Anil, and Aiden Anil.
Following her retirement in 2007, Kunjukunjamma moved to Bhilai with her husband. They were long time members of the Mar Gregorios Orthodox Cathedral, Bhilai, since the 1970s. After her husband’s passing in 2022, she moved to Kozhuvalloor, Kerala, to live with her daughter and became a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Adoor. In March 2024, she relocated to the United States to live with her two sons in Houston and became a member of the St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Cathedral, Houston.
Throughout her life, Kunjukunjamma was marked by compassion, service, prayer, and an unwavering love for Lord, her family, and her community. Her years of devoted nursing, her steadfast faith, and the quiet strength with which she cared for others remain a lasting legacy—one held close by all who knew her, and especially by those who were blessed to call her mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
