In Loving Memory of My Sista Cousin, Patricia Coleman

Some of the most precious memories are the ones that arrive unexpectedly. About 6 or 7  years ago, I received a call from a cousin I hadn’t known well at the time. She was living in Atlanta, Georgia. “Pam, this is your cousin Pat,” she said. “Blucci gave me your number.”

From that very first conversation, we just clicked. We started using video calls to catch up on family, to laugh, to fill in the missing pieces of each other’s lives. She spoke so often of her late husband—what a good man he was, how everyone loved him. Several times, she told me how much she missed him. I could feel the love still fresh in her heart.

We traded family photos, laughing at how some of us looked so much alike—Ladrenda and my niece Leslie, Brenda’s son and my brother Tommy’s son. We talked often, and we laughed often. She and her friend planned to come visit me in Pgh. while she was still in Atlanta, though life got in the way, and it never happened.

When her health began to decline, we switched to texting so she could save her energy. Even then, we started nearly every morning with a greeting: “Good morning, sunshine.” Thinking of you. Scriptures. Songs. “I love you.” And every night, we’d end with sweet dreams and “God has you.”

I asked if she wanted me to come visit. She said yes—but only when she got well. I told her that was fine, that I didn’t expect her to do anything, that I just wanted to be there for her. She said she’d let me know.

To her children: Your mother was a good-hearted, sweet person. I say this not just as a cousin, but as family who knows how deep those bonds run. To her siblings: She was a great sister. A true jewel.

Rest in Peace, Pat until we see each other again. God truly has You.

Pat, you fought a mighty good fight, baby girl. God saw fit to call you home, and you have earned your wings. You’re with your loving husband now, at rest. It’s a bridge we all must cross someday. And though I miss our chats and our texts, I find peace knowing you’re no longer suffering or worrying about anything because you are free. 

I pray for all of us still here on Earth—that we find peace in Jesus. Pat’s spirit lives on. Her loving legacy will carry until the end of time.

To my dearest friend Pat, Anyone who crossed paths with you knows what a kind hearted person you were. From the first day at work when you grabbed some of my pretzels from my bag I knew you were someone very different.               I was so right about that. You are such  a beautiful caring loving person and anyone who has been around you has been blessed to have known you. I miss all of our talks and hugs and I know I will never have a friend that I could feel how much you loved and cared for me too.  I’m sad for your children and babies that you love so much .Then I think how lucky they were to have you and know you will be with them every day of their lives. I know in my heart you’re up there with the love of your life smiling from ear to ear.  I must say that puts a smile back on my face. Until we meet again my beautiful sweet friend I LOVE YOU , Kim
