Abraham Alvin “Abe” Mitchell passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of generosity, humility, hard work, service, and love that will be felt throughout Mobile and far beyond for generations to come.
Abe was born in Mobile, Alabama, on November 19, 1934, to Rebecca and Joseph Mitchell. In 1947, he entered Riverside Military Academy, graduating in 1952 as both Battalion Commander and valedictorian of his class. He continued his education at the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, earned his law degree from the University of Alabama, and received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation from New York University School of Law.
A highly respected businessman and real estate developer, Abe built apartments, single-family homes, and shopping centers throughout the Southeast. Beyond his considerable business accomplishments, he was a devoted philanthropist whose generosity and commitment to improving the lives of others left an enduring mark on his community.
Abe's dedication to the University of South Alabama was among his greatest passions. His long standing support of the Mitchell College of Business and the Mitchell Cancer Institute reflected his deep belief in the importance of education, medical advancement, and service to others. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of Jaguar athletics and an avid fan who rarely missed an opportunity to attend South Alabama football and basketball games.
While Abe found great fulfillment in his business endeavors and philanthropic commitments, some of his greatest joys were found in the company of family and friends. He especially cherished traveling the world with his beloved longtime partner, Janie, sharing experiences and creating treasured memories together.
Despite his many accomplishments, Abe remained a man of remarkable humility, whose life reflected an unwavering commitment to family, community, and service. His legacy will be measured not only by what he built and contributed, but also by the countless lives he touched along the way.
Abe was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca and Joseph Mitchell, his son, Brent Joseph Mitchell, his brother, Mayer Mitchell, and his sister, Ann Mitchell.
He is survived by his beloved partner of many years, Janie Rosner Allen, his sister, Fanny Mitchell Katz, his sister-in-law, Arlene Mitchell, and his nieces and nephews, Robert Weber, Jay Weber (Sheri), Riv Goldman (Alan), Richard Mitchell (Susan), Melinda Wertheim (Steven), Joy Grodnick (Jimmy), and Lisa Buckstein (Barry). Also surviving Mr. Mitchell, are Kenny J. Sylvester, his personal assistant for over 44 years, and Kenny’s wife, Gail, as well as his devoted, long-time staff, Jim Spafford, Wynette Williams, Ginny Bloch, and Phyllis Mixon.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Ahavas Chesed Synagogue, 705 Regents Way, Mobile, Alabama 36609.
