A lifelong resident and native of Mobile, she attended Leinkauf Elementary School, Barton Academy and Murphy High School and graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After briefly teaching at Westlawn Elementary School, she married Norman A. Nicolson (Nickie) in 1952.
She and Nickie enjoyed entertaining at home in Spring Hill where family and friends enjoyed many wonderful dinners enhanced by Nickie’s ample wine collection. She loved good food, butter, cream, and cooking, reveled in the role of hostess, and loved her house on Turnout Lane, it’s furnishings, and her many neighbors there throughout the years. Later in life she and Nickie visited with friends old and new at Perdido Key. After moving to Westminster Village in recent years, she enjoyed her new life in that community.
She was a member of the Junior League of Mobile, several mystic societies, attended Spring Hill Presbyterian Church and The Shoulder, and later in life enjoyed her Odyssey Institute classes. She was always well informed of the goings-on in Mobile and the world and was a lifelong reader of the New York Times.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Norman Alexander Nicolson (Nickie), her parents Norman Mcleod McInnis and Berney Herrin McInnis, and her siblings Berney, Norman M. McInnis, Jr., William, Sarah M. Whitely, Herrin E. McInnis, Catherine, and Jean M. McMillan. She is survived by her children Norman M. Nicolson (True), Margaret Ann Nicolson and J. David A. Nicolson (Carson) along with her 7 grandchildren, Norman, Alexander, True, Ann-Grace, Lillie, William, and Cecile, 3 great-grandchildren, Annie, Greeley, and William Nicolson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their tremendous gratitude to her devoted team of caregivers.
She was a lady of strength and character, a loving mother, and a friend to many. She will be missed by all, especially her dear friend Sally McPhillips.
There will be a graveside service Wednesday, September 3rd, 11:00 at Springhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mobile Symphony, Feeding the Gulf Coast and the Nature Conservancy of Alabama.
