Annabelle W. Phillips, 93, passed away in a local facility early Saturday, August 3, 2019. Mrs. Phillips was born February 13, 1926 in Charleston, West Virginia and was a long time resident of Mobile. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. She served her church through the years, faithfully.
She holds a B.A. degree from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. She has further graduate work towards her doctorate from the University of South Alabama, Mobile. Mrs. Phillips taught school in Hawaii at King Kamehameha Elementary School, while serving as missionaries, alongside her late husband. She returned to Alabama and taught in the Mobile County School System for 46 years, 20 of those years as school administrator. Upon retirement, she served as teacher and principal of the Nazarene Elementary School. Her career experience in the public school system was used well at the church school. She loved that there was more freedom to teach about Christ and to share Christian Values with more openness and freedom.
Her religious activities are numerous and include pastor’s wife, teaching Sunday School for 74 years, pianist, organist and singing.
Mrs. Phillips has received many awards. Mother of the Year, 1975, Mobile. She was selected to appear in the World’s Who’s Who of Women, Personalities of the South for past achievement, outstanding ability and service of community and state.
Mrs. Phillips provided a lifetime of loving, caring, and sharing. She is survived by her only daughter, Twyla Phillips Johnson, wife of D.B. (Champ) Johnson, III; two granddaughters, Rachel J. Purvis (Nick), Annabelle Hope Archey (Zack); eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Carol Sue Ness of Puyallap, WA; and a host of friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2019 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 669 Azalea Road, Mobile, AL. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at the church at 12 noon. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
