Augustine Meaher III (“Gus”), a native Mobilian, passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2024. He was a 1957 graduate of University Military School (UMS) and a benevolent supporter of the school. He was recognized for his efforts in 2015 when he was honored as the Alumnus of the Year. A graduate of Tulane University and the Tulane School of Law, he was also a tireless worker for his alma mater. Gus served on various boards and committees at Tulane including two terms as chairman of the President's Parents Council. He was also a proud father of five Tulane graduates.
As a board member and president of the A.S. Mitchell Foundation for more than a quarter of a century, he directed philanthropic funds to numerous charitable institutions in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Gus was an esteemed member of Mobile's legal community for more than fifty years and served as the chairman of the Mobile Bar Association’s Law Library. In 2014, he was named Volunteer Lawyer of the Year for his pro bono services with the South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program.
He had a love for traveling, especially trips that involved observing solar eclipses. Mr. Meaher is survived by his six children: Four Meaher (Kadi), Meg Meaher, Annie Meaher, Sarah Meaher, Helen Meaher, and Sadie Meaher Wright (Josh). He is preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, Mary Lou. The family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers, Australia Mitchell, Loletha Reeves, Fay Lawson, Kyra Pikes, Tersea Banks, Felicia Fields, the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at Mobile Infirmary. A special thank you to his longtime friend, Molly Williams. Interment will be private at Magnolia Cemetery.
