Bernadette Cecilia Smallwood Martinez (Bernie) passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026 at the age of 74. She was born on August 2, 1952 in Mobile, Alabama. Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, William Anthony Smallwood and Hersie Sims Smallwood and her husband Stephen Joseph Martinez.
Bernie graduated from Northside High school in Warner Robins, Georgia on May 31,1971. Her family returned to Mobile in 1973. She loved Alabama football, bowling,drawing, and photography. She loved clothes and shopping was her favorite hobby. She had many penpals and made personalized cards.
Bernie loved being with family and friends and enjoyed holidays and family gatherings. One of her favorite things was dressing up and celebrating Mardi Gras. She loved telling “Bernie” jokes and making “Bernie” cards.
Funeral service will be held at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama 36606 on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 11 :00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m. prior to services.
