Betty Gray was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gaylord Clark Lyon, Sr., and by her parents, Madeleine Maury Hays and Charles Gray Hays. She is survived by her son, Gaylord Clark Lyon, Jr. (Janet) and by her daughter, Madeleine Lyon Downing (Edgar). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Gray Lyon Garrett (Kirk), Gaylord Clark Lyon, III (Jill), Jody Lyon Brinson (Charles), Joseph Richard Mighell Lyon, George Edgar Downing, III, and Madeleine Maury Downing; and by six great-grandchildren, Rebecca Rose Lyon, Marianne Hays Lyon, Liles Kirkman Garrett, Joseph Mighell Garrett, Charles Poyntz Brinson, and Lyla Gray Brinson.
Betty Gray lived in Springhill her entire life. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1940 and from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1944 where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She was active in many local organizations including the Junior League of Mobile and several mystic societies. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served as President of the Women of the Church. She also served in various leadership positions of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Alabama.
Known by friends and family as “BG”, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was kind and gracious to all. She enjoyed many years of her Wednesday “Bridge Club” with dear friends who quickly realized that bridge was interfering with fun conversation and accordingly kept the name but did away with the cards. BG will be missed by her family and many friends.
Her family is very appreciative of years of service from Cricket McDaniel and from caregivers, Anna Anthony, Sabina Arrington, Linda Mitchell, Alycia Tanner, and Francine Moffett.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday February 4th at 11:00, preceded by visitation in the Parish Hall at 9:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 4051 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608 or to Wilmer Hall at 3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608.
