Carmel Bernadette Whelan

Carmel Whelan, age 95, of Mobile, Alabama, left this earth on Thursday October 31, 2024, after a brief illness. Carmel was born in Dublin Ireland to Mary Ann & Edward Cushen. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter Whelan, her sisters, Marie (Carl) Marnell, Sister of the Sacred Heart Angela Cushen, Philomena Cushen, Vera (Nick) Moneley, and two brothers who died in infancy.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter Philomena Armstrong, a granddaughter Melissa Boyette and two great grandchildren Zarina Boyette & AJ Ashraf.

Carmel was an outstanding seamstress having completed her apprenticeship in Ireland. She also excelled in knitting and she had won numerous awards for Irish step dancing before leaving Ireland. She was also an avid gardener taking care of her yard well into her 90’s.

When she arrived in America she started her own home business making custom tailored clothing. She made quick friends with the Irish nuns and priests which led to a 30+ year career as office manager at the Allen Memorial Home. She retired at the ago of 70 and volunteered at Providence Hospital as a pink lady for many years.

She was a strong woman who was always willing to take on any task presented to her.
